Sorry if this has been asked before, what's the process for saving files to the cloud? I currently have the save location to my C:/programfiles folder as part of the normal setup wizard.

I have never done what you're asking, but I was just going through hundreds of old yWriter google groups emails seeing which ones I still wanted to save, and in one of those emails it was mentioned that you can save to the cloud by setting an alternative backup location - Tools>Backups>Configure Alternative BAckup Folder - allegedly you can specify here your cloud backup location.

Be sure to save your projects in yw7 format. Then all you need to do is copy the respective yw7 file to your cloud provider's synchronization directory. Optionally, you can also copy the entire contents of the project directory. This has worked well for me for years with Dropbox. As a precaution, I encrypted my synchronization directory with the free Cryptomator so that my work could not be viewed by third parties. Theoretically, you can also create your project directory directly in the synchronized folder, but I would personally advise against this.

If it's just about backups, you can also create an alternative backup folder in the cloud, as suggested by KM. Keep in mind, however, that synchronized cloud storage space doesn't really count as a backup. I prefer a USB stick for this purpose.

You might want to take a look at yWriter's built-in network-based backup options:

  • You canspecify an email address, and yWriter will send copies of the auto-backups there. This means that they are stored on the email server, i.e., also in the cloud, if you have IMAP access, or, in the case of POP3, the files remain on the server.
  • In addition, yWriter can upload copies of the auto-backups directly to network storage via FTP. I did this for a while with a NAS in my home.

Both settings can be found in the Tools > Backups submenu. To send emails through yWriter, you need to configure an SMTP server, and to upload to the web, you need to configure an FTP site. I don't know how it works now, but back then with yWriter 5, it was pretty tricky. But once it's set up, it's a solid solution.

My project folders are actually in my sync folder (I use Jottacloud); it has never been an issue the past several years. That way I always have my project on all my devices.

Yes, that works. But the thing is, if you accidentally delete your work on one device, it will disappear from all of them. Just think of the unfortunate fate of the yWriter Wiki.
Hopefully, you also have a local alternative backup folder specified.

Or a cloud provider just going broke or getting hacked and wiped.

I'd use the cloud for secondary backups, but not my only copy.
