Hi Everyone,

I adore this software so much on Windows, but am getting an error on Linux...
My apologies if this has been resolved before. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

What I'm running:
Linux Mint 20.2 (Uma)
yWriter5 Beta Version 5.6.2.6
mono/wine-mono (tried both)

The error:
Couldn't open a scene window
Screenshot from 2021-11-19 10-36-48.png

Log output:
10:23:56 Couldn't create editor for ScID: 1 in frmMain:EditScene
10:23:56 Could not load type of field 'LibSpacejockWin.SJSpeech.clsTalker:_Voice1' (0) due to: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Speech, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. in frmMain:EditScene

Thoughts:
It looks like it's failing because it wants to load some text-to-speech situation that doesn't exist. Is there anything I can do to disable/avoid this since I don't need it? As far as I'm aware System.Speech is unique to Windows and is absent from mono all together so I am not sure how others have resolved this error...

If anyone knows how to fix this, thanks in advance for saving my life!

Can you try yWriter 6 and 7?

Wine should work better than Mono, for sure, but you need to install dotnet 4.6.2 under wine for yW6 and 4.8 under wine for yw7.

I am having a hard time getting yWriter7 to work on the Linux installation on this Chromebook. I have wine installed, dotnet4.8, and wine-mono. (It wouldn't open unless I had wine-mono even though I had dotnet4.8.) I can run the program fine, but I can't open a scene editor. I get the same error as above.

If you check the log file you might find an error regarding the missing speech engine.  yWriter uses a Dotnet 3.5 library for that, so Dotnet 3.5 must also be installed. (This is included by default on Windows going back to Vista.)

I installed dotnet35 and still get the error message. Here is what is in the log:

Couldn't create editor for ScID 1 in frmMain:EditScene
Could not load type of field 'LibSpacejockWin.SJSpeech.clstalker:Voice1'

I found this post where you say that there is some remnant of the code that is throwing an error.... could that be happening here?

Strange.  That error is definitely related to the SJSpeech module. Can you tell if if the very latest yWriter7 Beta does it?

If not, perhaps yWriter8 and dotnet 6.0 will work, as yWriter8 does not have the speech component at all.

wine-mono should not be required by the way. If you have that, it could be trying to run yWriter using mono instead of dotnet, which is why it's not working. It has to run under native dotnet, not mono.

Did you ever get this resolved? I'm having the same problem. Thanks!

As soon as I get a chance I'll put yWriter 7 beta onto my Ubuntu virtual machine and see if I can't get it working again.
