HI - I just updated to yWriter 5 a couple weeks ago, got the
dictionary installed, everything fine - but it won't "see"
contractions - didn't, doesn't, we've, etc - they all come up as
spelling errors.

Couldn't add them to the custom dict using the right-click menu. Went
in and added them manually to the custom file. No dice.

When using dictionary lookup, the word comes up as "didn%20t" not
"didn't" - so I think this must be something to do with the .Net code
you are using for the software. Explains why it doesn't see "didn't"
as a word, since it's really 'didn%20t'.

Help?

Hi,

I've had the same problem, and when I saw your post, I was
relieved that it just wasn't 'me' or something I had done. I've
been anxiously awaiting a response, and haven't seen anything.

Are you still having the problem, or have you figured out a
resolution?

Thanks.

One of the dictionaries in the 12dicts file includes contractions (I think it's the biggest file)

Does that solve the issue? If not, it's a bug to be fixed.

Cheers

It works fine for me. If I recall correctly, the last person who had this
problem was using 'curly' apostrophes rather than straight ones. Is that
the case here?

Good point. Older versions didn't have curly apostrophes in the spell check 'punctuation characters' box.

Open any scene, click Settings then Autobackups & Punctuation, then Other and add the curly apostrophe to the first box (after all the other characters)

(I thought my spell check routine converted them to straight quotes before spell checking though. Perhaps this is an older version of YW5?)

Hmmmm . . . this contraction issue seems to be a bit more involved -
at least for me, on my computer. The 'curly' apostrophes were indeed
a problem. Any contraction with a curly apostrophe was flagged as
a misspelled word. By the way, I don't have a key on my laptop that
will create a curly apostrophe within the yWriter scene editor. These
were apparently propagated throughout the text when I imported my
original Word 'RTF' docs into yWriter. I took two different whacks at
fixing this problem. First, I did as Simon suggested: I added a curly
apostrophe onto the end of the list of characters to be ignored by the
spell checker. Oddly, this fixed some of the contractions, but not
all.
For example, the contractions "He's" and "They're" were just fine -
no
longer interpreted as misspelled words. However, the contractions
"couldn't" and "wouldn't" were still flagged as errors. However, the
error indication was a little different. Before adding the curly
apostrophe to the end of the list of ignored characters, the entire
words "couldn't" and "wouldn't" were highlighted in red as a mis-
spelled word. After adding the curly apostrophe, only the letters
up to, but not including the apostrophe are highlighted in red.
My second attempt was to simply go through the text and replace
the curly apostrophes with the straight one. This yielded exactly
the same results as adding the curly apostrophe to the list of
ignored characters - some contractions are fine and some are not.
Anyway, I don't know if some bizarre set of cosmic circumstances
causes this on my computer only, or if it is a problem others will
have.
I submit this information in hopes that it will be of some value, and
if it is a bug (certainly, only a slightly annoying one), perhaps this
will assist Simon in his diagnosis of that bug.

yWriter is still the best program available for writing that Pulitzer
Prize winning novel; and I should know because I've used damned
near every one of them.

Happy Prosing!

Are you pasting things from a word document? Word not only uses
"smart" quotation marks, but a host of other nasty nonsense that can
screw up other editors.

The easiest way is to paste everything into Notepad first, then copy
and paste from Notepad. That cleans out all the potentially
troublesome garbage quickly.
