Apologies if this question has been previously asked and answered.

I use 'SugarSync' to sync between two computers via that glorious, but nebulous 'cloud', and have been using it with yWriter5 for at least 2 years without any issues to speak of - certainly no issues involving any data loss. Recently (I think after upgrading to one of the latest releases of yWriter5 - but can't be sure exactly when),
I've been receiving the following message from SugarSync when I start up yWriter5:

SugarSync has detected that "projectname.yw5.lock" has changed. This file cannot be opened because it is currently open in another application.

Please close the file in use to allow SugarSync to sync the new version to the cloud.

I then click on the dialog box containing this message (effectively ignoring it), it closes, and that's the end of it. I've observed no issues as a result of this but I'm wondering if I'm missing something and there really are some syncing issues I need to resolve. I currently work from two computers and I get the message on both of them. Both are running Windows 7, and yWriter5 v:5.2.0.6.

If anyone has an explanation, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks and keep writing!

Dick

Sounds like your trying to sync while a yWriter project is open. When a project is open yWriter creates a lock file to prevent the files being opened simultaneously by two programs. It then deletes the lock file when the project is closed.

If the project isn't open then yWriter isn't deleting the lock file for some reason and there's a problem somewhere.

I want to unsubscribe from ywriter as I'm not using the program. However, when I go up to Google Groups it tells me I'm not subscribed in the first place. I get an awful lot of mail for someone who isn't subscribed to the list. <G>

Could someone please take pity on me and unsubscribe me? I get about 200-250 emails a day, so anything to cut down on that is greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Judith Ring

That seems an awful lot. Could a spammer have hijacked the yWrite mail server address to flood you with junk?

The one thing missing from this explanation is that yWriter locks the lock file while the project is open, so that other applications can't access it.  This is the reason for the warning message from the synchronization program - it isn't able to copy the file due to the lock.  Note that yWriter actually checks for the lock on the file, not for the file's existence per se, which is why a stray lock file isn't a problem when you open a project with yWriter.

Dave and KL, Thanks much for your responses. I think I get all that, but I'm still a little confused. My syncing software syncs all files in specified folders when it detects a change at the time the file is closed. So, if the yw5.lock file isn't being changed it shouldn't get synced anyway, And if it is changed, it should only get synced when it is closed. The only reason I'm puzzled is, like I said, this just started happening. Maybe I've somehow managed to accidentally generate an extra yw5.lock file, or Simon has modified lock file processing in yWriter 'under the covers' and the file gets opened and closed during normal yWriter5 sessions. I don't know. Most importantly I guess, and yielding this discussion completely academic, is that there are no apparent problems as a result of this.I was just wondering why it suddenly started to happen. Thanks again for your thoughts.

The lock file should only exist while your project is open. It should be deleted when the project (or yWriter) is closed. The
error
message is almost certainly a "not
very
useful" standard message. The lock file isn't present in the Cloud folder (it shouldn't be) as it is never present at the time that actual sync takes place. When SugarSync tries to perform a sync operation it detects a file (.lock) that is only present in one location and tries to mirror it to the Cloud. Of course
,
it can't
,
so the action fails as does the y
W
riter project sync. When the project closes then the sync
ing occurs minus the lock file which has already been deleted.

Regards

Carl

Yeah, I realized I missed that part after I hit send but considered it bad form to reply to myself. :)

Sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear. Most of these are not ywriter. It's just that I seem to be buried under email and want to lighten the load. I apologize for the miscommunication

Yes I have. The mailer daemon sent it back. Don't remember the reason. And when I went up to the group site, it told me I wasn't subscribed in the first place. ???

Just clicked on your link instead of the one at the bottom of each email. Looks as though it might have worked. Thank you for making me try again.

With crossed fingers that this one did the trick, I'll say goodbye and thank you for a really useful list.
