Forcing Word Count

Is there a way to force word count for every scene in a project?

Background
I installed yWriter5 on my laptop to give it a whirl - my old writing
package won't run on my laptop due to Windows 7. I converted an old
project from chapters into scenes as you do and did lots more words.
Things seemed okay so I also installed on my desktop and proceeded to
synch them, merrily copying rtf's and the yw5 file between machines.
Today I noticed an 'old' word count lurking on a recently updated
scene. The word count is self evidently wrong see link:

I suspect that I missed copying a yw5 file, which I guess holds the
word count for each scene. Simply opening and closing the scene
doesn't update word count. My project has over 500 scenes. The thought
of editing each, to be certain of word count, isn't a thrilling one.
Any ideas?

I've noticed this as well, when I'm using ywSynch. When I start up
yWriter after synching scenes back to it, sometimes word counts do seem
to get updated, but usually they don't until I edit the scenes and save
them in yWriter (which then means I have to remember to synch them back
again because the date/time has changed on the rtf files).

Maybe I write more slowly than everyone else and therefore have smaller files, but I copy everything over to a thumb drive each night. 

I don't use a synch program.  I've found the manual method works without error when I move between my laptop and PC (provided I over-write the old with the new...).  When I launch yWriter with the updated files, the word count and data is all as it should be. 

I don't know if that idea's of any use to anyone...

The problem with this is that memory sticks wear out. (They're cheap to replace, but that doesn't help if you find you can't read your data.)

A sync only replaces altered files, which is less of a strain on the memory stick.

Re the wordcount, yWriter doesn't read & count on startup (as mentioned before on this group) because it would take a long, long time. Instead, it updates the wordcount when you open and then save a scene.

I'm pretty sure there's a function which forces a full wordcount. One of the reports, maybe. When exporting or printing the files have to be converted to plain text, and at that point it updates the wordcount too.

Your word counts will be correct, because you are copying the yw5 file
over as well. ywSynch only copies the scene documents, converting them
to doc and back again, so that I can edit them on my android netbook.

I was tempted to add something to it to update the word counts (opening
the rtf file as a text stream and using a regex to strip out formatting
and total the word matches) but I'm concerned that it might give results
that are different to the yWriter calculation.

It's trivial for me to add a 'force wordcount' feature. I'll do it now.

I just realised a few minutes ago that I don't need to update the rtf
file to get yWriter to update the word count, I only need to tell it to
open the scene in the external editor, and close it again. But an option
to update the count would be easier.

I thought this wasn't working at first, but after a bit of experimenting
I realise it is. It updates the status bar straight away, but the word
count in the scene and chapter lists don't get updated until something
else causes them to be. It's a minor thing, though. The important thing
was to get the counts in the yw5 file updated, and thanks for that.

I hope we realise how spoiled we are. Someone makes a useful
suggestion, and within days, it's added to the software and made
available. I don't know of, or use, any other software package with
this level of user engagement and turnaround.

You're welcome! I designed yWriter to write my own novels. As long as I keep writing, yWriter will continue to be actively supported.
