I am having a problem loading the spell checker dictionary - probably
putting it in the wrong place or something. Has anyone else had a
problem with this? Any suggestions what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks,

I share your problem:
1) "download dictionary" command fails.
2) I downloaded and placed the dict files in both the "roaming"
spacejock folder AND the program files (x86) folder.
3) yWriter still doesn't seem to do a spelling check.
I assume I'm missing the obvious (one of my better-honed skills).

You need to extract the contents of the zip file to the dict folder inside the yWriter5 program folder

Spell check is not "Auto" and it's does not suggest like MS word. It
just turns the incorrect Word red.

Spell checking is done when you hit F7, and if selected when you save
or load the scene.

To enable the Save/Display check:

Scene Window -> Spelling -> (Tick Item) Spell Check on Display and
Save.

I hope that helps.

These clues helped, thank you! My spelling menu continued to be just
"install" and "Open Directory".

Through a bit of trial and error pieced together the following:
At SourceForge, the download to grab is NOT the dictionary at the top.
You need one from the actual 12dict set found further down the list -
(and you actually get 12 files in the ZIP file!)
I placed this in a Dict subdir under the yWriter program directory,
however this did not solve the problem. I found another subdirectory
in my Roaming directory for yWriter/Dict. Placing the dictionary files
here did the trick!

Thanks again for the help.

Art

I GIVE UP!

I've tried this and as many perturbations as I can think of. While
I'm doing that I'm not writing.

I'm using a third party editor that comes with a spell checker.

Thanks for trying.

I am using yWriter ver. 6.0.0.2

Under spelling, I see two options: "install dictionary" and "open the dictionary folder". When I tried to install the dictionary, it did not download, and it said, "dictionary NOT installed". I downloaded the word list zip file, "12dicts-6.0.2.zip" and extracted it to dict folder as directed.
I then restarted the program. All, to no avail. I cannot get the dictionary to install.

The "open the dictionary folder" option is intriguing. If I do that, is there some executable file, or set up file, in the folder that will install the dictionary?
It looks like I need some specific guidance. I just can't figure it out.

Your assistance would be appreciated, thanks in advance,

Ralph Beamer

Manually adding the yWriter spell checker:

1) Download the latest 12dicts file from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wordlist/
2) Extract this file to the Dict folder inside your yWriter5 program folder
3) Restart yWriter

It appears that yWriter doesn't like the directory structure that extracting the latest 12dicts-6.0.2.zip creates. This archive no longer just plops a bunch of list files into the dict folder - it creates subfolders containing the lists. Copy the list files out of the subfolders into the main dict folder (in my case C:\Users\shawda\AppData\Roaming\Spacejock Software\yWriter6\Dict), and the spell checker works as expected. This is also true for yWriter5.

Thanks for that - someone sent me a copy of the 6.0 file last night, and I'll mod yWriter to look in the 'American' folder inside Dict, just in case. At least it will work!
