Hello,

I'm new to yWriter, these forums and writing in general!

I've been using yWriter quite happily for a month or so now. However,
I just got a new computer and can't figure out how to move my project
to this new location. Normally, I would do a "save as" to copy the
whole project to a flash/thumb drive and then re-open the project in
the new location. However, yWriter does not have a "save as" feature.

When I tried to just copy and paste the yw5 file itself, I received
quite a few "empty chapter" warnings when opening that file on the new
computer. I seem to be missing about 500 words of the project. The
problem seems to be that yWriter has a lot of related data saved in
the directory that contains the yw5 file which does not get moved if
you just copy the project file.

What is the right way to move my project from one computer to another?
I did a search and found only instructions for exporting bits and
pieces (e.g., chapters, characters, etc.). Obviously I'm missing
something here.

Thanks!

You'll need to pick up the entire directory(s) where your project is stored and move the entire project to the new computer.

Hi,

I think there are at least a few ways to accomplish what you want to
do, but I think the simplest way is simply to use Windows Explorer to
drag and drop your complete yWriter project folder (in my case this is
'yWriter Projects'),
to the desired location. It sounds like the actions you should take
would be 1.) drag and drop the folder from your existing computer to
the 'flash' drive; 2.) move that drive to the new computer, and then
3.) drag and drop the folder from the 'flash' drive to the desired
location on your new computer.

When all that is done, you should them be able to start yWriter on the
new computer and open the desired project by simply navigating to the
folder you just created.

I hope this info helps.

Good luck.

Thanks all! I did end up copying the entire projects folder to a flash
drive and pasted it at the new location. Worked like a charm! Whew....

As for myself, I sometimes work on my laptop as well, so I keep the
entire project folder on a marked flash drive. I also have the program
on both computers, but I work from the directory on the flash. Always
up to date!
I also back up regularly from the flash drive to whichever computer,
so, if the flash drive craters I won't lose everything.
