Has anybody tried yWriter on one of those Windows "Surface" tablets with Windows 8 RT. I understand it has a different hardware architecture, so a recompile might be required. Also, it is possible that it needs to be made available in the Windows app store ... I really don't know.

In any case, it seems much more likely to get yWriter running on one of those machines than getting it to run on an iPad or an Android tablet. Would be awesome if it worked, obviously. (The Surface also provides for a magnetically attachable "real" keyboard which I need for serious typing.)

Win 8 RT only runs the silly Metro apps under an ARM architecture. The Desktop and therefore Desktop applications won't run. The only answer that I can see would be for Simon to write a completely new yWriter Metro App that mimic'd the real yWriter. Then he'd get requests for an Android (linux) version and an Ipad IOS (FreeBSD - Linux again) version.

Personally (and it's only a personal opinion), I think more a effective alternative would be to use a distraction free text editor on a Tablet (they are available for just about every flavour of OS now and most are free) and transfer one's writing back into yWriter back at the ranch. Me? I use a Samsung netbook (with 2GB RAM & Win 7 Home Premium installed) when out and about as it fits neatly into my manbag, is pretty well as convenient as a Tablet but has a proper keyboard rather than the flat bit of plastic that comes with the Surface (and is likely to give most proper typists severe cases of RSI). Best of all, it runs yWriter without the need for MONO, VM or any other emulation.

As I had it drummed into me in my years in the army - "Use the correct tools, correctly."  :))

Regards

Carl

As Carl explained, it would be a lot of work for Simon to rewrite yWriter to run on Windows RT.  If you want to run it on a Surface as it stands today, you'll need a Surface Pro, which runs regular Windows 8 and can therefore run 'classic' Windows applications like yWriter.  I know that's a pricey option - certainly not one I could justify in this day of sub-$400 Windows notebooks.

Hi Carl

thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I suspected as much ... but was hoping (maybe 'wishing' is a better word) a simple recompile would work too.

Hi Dave

thanks for the quick reply as well. Yes, I realize the Pro would work but yeah ... the price. Seems I need to look for a non-touchy subnotebook. Sigh.

Cheers
