Marquee Moon's title was interpreted by Waterman as an encapsulation of the urban and bucolic imagery in the songs, "suggesting the kind of night sky only visible above the neon glare of city-dwellers' assault on the dark". In his mind, the marquee rather than the moon in the concept sets the record's mood. He added, "sensory experience will be of prime importance to these eight songs. What can we see by the light of a marquee moon? What will be revealed on Marquee Moon's grooves?"[33]

I've been curious about what the earliest usage of "angular" guitars in rock music is, and most often I see the proto-post-punk band Television's 1977 debut "marquee moon" considered the rosetta stone of such a style. I use the term "rosetta stone" because it's unique sound may have come from translating the avant garde styles of 1960s Jazz into a much more stripped back and simple rock context.

I just want to ask if there are any earlier examples of angular guitar specifically in a rock context. Perhaps in the jazz fusion and prog rock bands of the early 70s, I know television got compared somewhat to king crimson back in the day. But I think Television is considered the starting point for angular rock music because they incorporated those jazz ideas into much more traditional pop / rock formats, and that has what allowed the band to become an influence on the quirky nature of post-punk / new wave bands and subsequent styles that were inspired by them.

Iv listened to alot of the strokes influences before I actually became a fan of the Strokes early last yr, the Doors, Velvet Underground iggy pop etc. I have Spotify free so random songs are recommended and this song came up by television ( a band I not very familiar with tbh) , and the riffs in it sounded so similar to what I'm sure was a strokes song but I can't remember which one? I think it's probably one from the first 4 albums but I'm not 100% sure. Am i making things up or do parts of it generally sound like a strokes song? If so which one/ ones? Thanks :)

i agree with most of myeh man except for the actual marquee moonmarquee would mean as those letters that move showing announcements and stuff.with a marquee moon it would mean standing under time as the moon moves across the sky throughout the nightimethe song continues to say "just waiting"all marquee moon means is time.

I see this song as life summarized. Going through the darkness (hard times) and sometimes bringing them upon yourself hence "lighting struck itself". "Listening to the rain, hearing something else" being all of the small things that act as reminders of your past and inevitably interpreting things differently than others.Any life choices you make changing you as a person whether that be for better or worse is what I get out of "the kiss of death, the embrace of life" and the marquee moon is a metaphor for the passing of time although sometimes you get impatient. I believe the third verse to be about living your life cautiously under apathetic terms and the fourth to be about being in with the wrong crowd and going nowhere or always ending up back where you started.

oh i took the phrase marquee moon as night after night. isnt marquee like sort of .. well one of the definitions says its a "permanent canopy often of metal and glass..." or like those signs at the entrance of some arena that displays the performers.Or a title given to a headliner.like at a concert.a really popular person.i thought it had meant recurring moon .. as in the moon just seems to be constantly passing by as in its always nighttime.=/
