Uber kickstarted the evolution of the taxi market in the early 2010s, when it launched an app which easily connected drivers with riders. In California where the app launched, ordering a cab was a nightmare, so much so that co-founder Garrett Camp had established his own fleet of black cabs to pick him up from bars and clubs.
Since 2017, Uber has taken its foot off the gas, selling its stake in India and leaving several European countries. It also sold its autonomous vehicle unit to Aurora, in return for a significant stake in the startup. It has cleaned up its image, although several countries are currently looking into whether Uber drivers should be considered employees. The UK was one of the first countries to recognise them as such.
ViewTool Ginkgo USB to CAN [amazon.com] isn't bad. They have drivers and libraries for OS X, Windows and Linux. It has 2 CAN lines and taking it apart they actually separated the CAN side from the USB side on the PCB. (Something not even Vector's CAN boxes do).
Which, by the way, Apple has already done at least twice now:
- Every iPhone sold around the globe since the iPhone 8 supports the NFC frequencies and auth scheme used in Japan for contactless payments (Suica / Pasmo), where basically every android phone sold that supports the same MUST be purchased in Japan. Some Android phones may have hardware support, but you have to root the phone and hack some config files to get it to work, opening yourself up to all the other hassles that come with rooting your phon
There's little to no speed degradation in the apps that I use. The 8+ would still be my daily driver if work hadn't given me a 13 Pro for free (to me). Apple will likely discontinue updates for it soon, but we're looking at a six year old device that still gets feature and security updates, which is pretty damned good in this space.
I had Apple replace the battery on my previous phone (an iPhone 8) and it came back looking like they pried it apart using a dull flat blade screwdriver. I only went with Apple's repair because I wanted a genuine battery and not one of the knockoffs from eBay/Amazon. This time around, I'll take Apple up on their DIY solution and do the swap myself.
