Hello All

At our meeting a few weeks back I suggested a method for youth engagement based on rapidly seeking out what young people have already said on a given topic - and putting together a report that brings together the voice of a wide range of young people.

I've given it the working title of 'Perspective Sourcing' and have written up a proposal for us to try it in the attached document.

What do you think?

Does this exist already?

Would you take part?

Tim

Hi Tim,

Sorry its taken me a while to get back to you about this. I'm not as
internet savy as I consider myself to be!

I think what you suggest is great, and you have got a well thought out
plan to ensure we get feedback from a range of people which i think is
important.

I think the only thing to consider is that some young people may not
fully understand the main question we ask, and so therefore it may be
useful for us to break the question down in to sub-questions which
will help lead people through the issues we're trying to discuss
better?

We may also need to provide background information which is to the
point and not lengthy so that people can understand what we are
talking about??

I don't know whether everyone will think this is necessary but just an
idea.

I look forward to us all meeting up soon and taking this forward.

Many Thanks

Hi all,

Jane and I (along with Tim) attended the YWG steering committee yesterday. We presented the ideas and recommendations that we made at the last youth participation meeting in June.

We both felt that the steering group were quite positive about the recommendations.

They were a bit worried about logistics in terms of having a total of 16 people on a steering committee. However, they agreed that the YWG could potentially be a good model for best practice in youth participation if some of our ideas were implemented.

If we are to have young people on the next steering committee we need to have recruited these young people before the end of August. Hannah and James were you going to write up Terms of Reference for this?

It was also suggested that we have Sarah Huxley along to a meeting to see how the YPG can feed into the youth guidance project.

James would it be possible to organise another meeting for the Youth Participation Sub Group so that Jane and I can present back to you all what we discussed in more depth and think about our next steps.

Regards

Ival

Hi all,

A big thank you to Ival, Jane and Tim for attending the YWG steering committee meeting and reporting our ideas and recommendations to them. I think we had solid ideas so hopefully some of these will be carried forward.

James is currently away on holiday but will be back in the office next week. He will have to confirm this but I think that it should be possible to hold another participation sub group meeting soon at BYC and invite Sarah Huxley.

James and I will be writing up the terms of reference but wanted to hold off until after the steering committee meeting to see what evaluative points had been made.

Ival - if you think it would be suitable to put together a draft of these terms before our next group meeting, could you please e-mail me your notes from the steering committee meeting.

Thanks and look forward to seeing you all soon.
Hannah

Hi All,

Below are the minutes from the steering committee regarding our presentation to them:

Youth Participation Sub Group update

·         Presentation by JB & IC on behalf of youth participation sub group.

·         YWG should become a model in youth participation with DFID i.e. DFID could copy in COs

·         Sub group has had first meeting and addressed 2 main questions:

1) How will YWG draw from a wide diverse group? Need for new faces & local partnerships: Youth boards already exist on CSOs  - aim to get them more involved, which will be aided by online presence. Maintenance of communication important so young people are not involved in one off events. Idea: having key YP in specific areas – they canvas ideas to groups via surveys.

2) How will YWG be most effective in involving YP?

Sub group will help with recruitment of YP & develop fair selection process. YWG should involve 15-24 year olds and Steering committee should be 50:50 – therefore meetings should take place after 5pm in London. Ideal if young participants are mentored & partnered with  adult/organisation. Do we want to get platform 2 involved? How do we engage with Masters students from sussex etc. Sub group to think through and map possibilities.

Action points

·         Co-chairing of steering meetings with youth participants – JB will start this (if no other interested YP) at next meeting.

·         Criteria for YP on steering committee A) some link or experience of youth network B) Capacity & time to take on tasks

·         Hannah & James are working on a ToR – to present at next sub group meeting.

·         Steering committee agreed there should be youth representation – undecided as if this should be 50:50 (adults: youth) – would see at first youth involvement in September (IC & JB to lead on this). Recruiting just for the steering group. Each sub group will make a decision about how they will set up. The steering committee were a little reluctant to agree on 50:50 split of adults to young people because they currently have 7 steering committee members and thought an overall group of 14 would be large to manage - but David was very for the idea and said that first off they should wait until they have a meeting where all 14 people turn up before making an issue of it and maybe they should also consider reducing the number of adults - i did say this was something we considered to be non-negotiable..

·         SC could have meetings in more innovative way- - skyping etc. so as to involve a wider range of youth i.e. less London centric.

·         Contact Jane for full outline of sub group meeting minutes – if needed.

Otherwise everyone was in full agreement with our recommendations and loved the fact that as the Youth participation committee we would be responsible for recruiting the YPs and ensuring that all this happened. They would like a Steering committee (adult) member to be on the interviewing panel but otherwise told us to go ahead and start doing these things.
Ival and I rememebered Hannah and James agreeing to put together some terms of reference for the young people we were looking to recruit - and the steering committee would like to see these before they go out - as mentioned in the minutes above - they are happy for the young people not to represent one of the member charities of the working group but feel that they must have links to a youth network (i.e be part of the scouts or youth parliament so that they are not just speaking as themselves but as young people connected to a wider group of young people.

Overall it was a really good meeting and they said its full steam ahead - but its down to us to ensure it all happens!

Hope this all makes sense!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon and discussing this all in greater detail.

Jane
