MILAN (Dow Jones)--Bangladeshi micro-finance firm Grameen Bank (GRABANK.YY) is in advanced talks with Italian bank UniCredit SpA (UCG.MI) and Bologna-based University to launch Grameen Bank Italia, Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus said Monday.
"We hope to be able to start operations this year," Yunus said, adding that no decision had been taken yet on where the first branch will be opened.
Yunus was awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his work helping millions of people out of poverty in Asia by providing them with small credits, which were denied to them by regular banks. Grameen Bank has also launched operations in the U.S.

Hi Chris, Maria Agnese:

ISF Italy is currently
  • engaged in a Madagascar microcredit project with Averiko onlus people from Venice onsite in Fiaranantsoa and
  • always interested to follow ISEP up directly from Prof. Yunus source.

Please keep us posted in case you could see any direct space to local support to Prof. Yunus that can be shared with ISF hundred of CIOs spread in Italy too: we would be very keen to organize a meeting with him if this should suit of course.

I remain at disposal from ISF foreign office to share any input that you should send about within our NGO.

Warmest regards,
Aldo mailto:intern...@informaticisenzafrontiere.org
