MILAN (Dow Jones)--Bangladeshi micro-finance firm Grameen Bank (GRABANK.YY) is in advanced talks with Italian bank UniCredit SpA (UCG.MI) and Bologna-based University to launch Grameen Bank Italia, Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus said Monday.
"We hope to be able to start operations this year," Yunus said, adding that no decision had been taken yet on where the first branch will be opened.
Yunus was awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his work helping millions of people out of poverty in Asia by providing them with small credits, which were denied to them by regular banks. Grameen Bank has also launched operations in the U.S. |
