"No more mistreatment of Yukkuris!!!"
"Let the yukkuris go free!!"
"You people need to treat yukkuris properly!!"
"Yukkuris are cute animals!! The DOS incident is a propaganda spread
by people who want to abuse yukkuris!!!"
"There's no way a Dosu-yukkuri is capable of destruction on such a
large scale!!!"
"Sir, I just clean the cages here. Please back away so I can do my
job and go home to my wife and kids. I'm on an hourly wage and-"
"YOU MONSTER!!!"
The man tossed a can of rotting bean-paste on the unfortunate
custodial worker, and he looked down in disbelief at his uniform as
the protesters cheered.
"That's it, I'm calling security."
"Go ahead and call your security!!"
"We will not bend over for TYRRANY!!"
"Justice for all yukkuris!!!"
In the post-DOS incident world, yukkuri camps are a popular place for
activists to protest. With their "help", yukkuris camps have received
a great deal of attention from the media, and lately the conditions of
a few camps have become more transparent. Images of cruel yukkuri-
concentration camps were circulating the internet and the media, where
yukkuris fought to eat out of a trough and were starved to an almost
zombified state.
PETY, People for the Ethical Treatment of Yukkuris, has gathered up
steam from the success of the publicity lately and have mounted
increasingly aggressive protests as of late, recruiting thousands of
new supporters all across the nation. Many camps are actively blocked
by protesting mobs, rendering workers unable to get to their jobs at
the compounds.
In their zealous blockade, the activists never thought about the
result of blocking all the workers that feed and clean the yukkuris.
They have been too intent on seizing the momentum that they had
forgotten what they were trying to protect were yukkuris, not their
political ideals.
=========
In a small camp near the coast, the protesters have mounted their
blockade for the 3rd day straight. The shouts could be heard 24/7 in
the area, and many residents of the town have been complaining about
the littering, loitering and noise pollution.
Of course, the yukkuris could hear the commotion as well. But they're
not concerned about human affairs.
"WHY DON'T MISDER GATE OPEENNNNN!!!"
"Mister gate please let Reimu out!!! Reimu is so hungry!!! Reimu needs
mister munch-munch!!!"
"Please let Marisa out!! Marisa wants to walk around!!!"
"Id's smelly!!! Please clean Reimu's poo-poo!!!! Yugyaaaa!!!"
"Can'd.... mobe..... misder... leg....."
"Lick... Lick.... Alice... thirsty...."
"Little ones, hang in there!! Hang in there easy!! Mister gate will
open soon!! Then mommy will bring back lots of mister munch-munch!!"
"Chen doesn't get ittttt~!!! It's hotttt~!! It's hottttt~!!!! Chen's
dyiinnnnnggg!!!"
"Mukyuuuu!!! It stinkksss!!!! It stinks.... Patchouli feels sick....
BLARF"
"Mwommie!!! Mwommie... Mwommie... is rotting!!! Noooooo!!!"
It's a hot summer day, and this camp hasn't been manned in over three
days. The gates haven't been opened, the yukkuris haven't been fed,
and the ventilation fans are standing still. The dead bodies haven't
been cleaned out and were making other yukkuris sick, and there was no
water being provided to the yukkuris at all. Without the workers
there to operate the massive gates and to regulate the water supply
(the water needs to be turned off each night in order to avoid
possible leaks that will kill yukkuris), the yukkuris are basically
being starved to death. Many weaker yukkuris have already died, and
the hot summer day is baking the yukkuris alive in their cages without
the cool air from the ventilation fans.
In comparison to the older draconian prison camps, this particular
yukkuri-camp was one of the newest ones. Built on the shores with
one side of the camp completely cutoff by a towering cliff, this
yukkuri-camp only has 3 walls and enjoys a constant sea-breeze that
makes the place cool in the summer and warm in the winter for the most
part.
The yukkuris sleep in 3 story tall small hab-units that can
accommodate two adult yukkuris and three baby yukkuris, and they are
given two free days per week to relax in accordance to extensive
yukkuri research. They are given two meals a day, and once every week
they would get sweet-sweets (leftover cakes and bread from the local
bakery) as desserts. The families were even allowed to live together
for a period of time, and the yukkuris had two hours of free time
every day.
However, the compound is still more or less a prison, and the basic
commodities (food&shelter) were not designed to be "easy". The food
is the basic sludge ground up from leftover garbage and industrial
waste, and the shelters are unfurnished so that it is rough and
uncomfortable on the yukkuris' feet. The koyukkuris would be removed
from their parents after three weeks, so that they couldn't take it
too easy. However, they could still meet up with their parents during
the free times.
In the post-DOS world where yukkuris were often treated worse than
rats and roaches, this little compound is a slice of paradise for
yukkuris. It even has a completely daycare section where pet owners
could leave their pets, and the compound doubled as a temporary pet-
shelter for the small coastal town that it served. But the yu-
activists don't care about the conditions, because a yukkuri-camp is
still a yukkuri-camp to them. The goal is to shut down all the camps
and let the yukkuris go free, back into the wilds where they belong.
In the war between the activists and the government, the yukkuris
suffered.
================
"Lick... Lick... Little ones, hang in there..."
"Mwommie.... sho... hungwy...."
"Yunnn.... but there is no food..."
Three little Marisas and one mother Reimu. Marisa had been killed in
an accident falling off mister floor plank when Reimu was pregnant,
and Reimu had been reduced to a single mother. She licked each of the
three little fist-sized koyukkuris gently, and promised that mister
gate would open soon so they could get mister munch-munch.
Reimu tried to ignore the dead smell coming from the cubicle next to
hers. A sickly but wise Patchouli lived there, a wise Patchouli that
was a pillar of knowledge for the yukkuris in the camp. Her beliefs
were often criticized by other yukkuris in the camp as not-easy, but
Reimu and her little ones respected Patchouli greatly.
They would sit under the single peach tree in the compound's exercise
lot, and Patchouli would teach Reimu's three little Marisas about what
it means to be a yukkuri, and pass down stories about the great DOS
from a faraway land.
****
"Mukyuuu, poisonous mushrooms look like these.... memorize them easy
little ones! Little ones will take it easy forever if little ones eat
these mister mushrooms~"
"Mister house should be built in these types of trees and boulders..."
"Little ones, here's how you make a simple shovel out of mister
sticks..."
"Little ones, if little ones ever make it outside of this compound,
these are the easy mister foods that you can collect... try to
memorize them all~"
Patchouli was a fountain of knowledge, faithfully passing down what
her mother and her mother's mother taught for many generations.
Unfortunately, most of the yukkuris in the compound don't care much
for the knowledge, and took her for a crazy old kook. After all,
there's no practical application to anything she taught when they
can't go outside.
These three little Marisas were faithful students, but their favorite
lessons were always the ones about the great DOS.
"Mukyuu... DOS was over 10 meters tall, as big as mister cubicles.
DOS could trample mister humans beneath her feet, and had a splendid
DOS-Spark that would send mister humans running in fear. DOS was the
ruler of the world, but the cowardly mister humans gathered together
one night and attacked DOS while she was sleeping, mukyuuuuu."
""""Yuuuuu~~~""""
"Nobody knows what happened to DOS, Mukyuuu... some yukkuris say DOS
was defeated by mister humans, and others said that DOS ran away after
being wounded. But one thing is for certain... the humans have named
the encounter the DOS incident."
""""Yuuuuu~~~""""
"One thing is for certain.... DOS is no longer with us, mukyuuu. So
little ones must stay strong. Remember that little ones shouldn't
take it easy for the sake of taking it easy, and one day little ones
will become like DOS as well."
"Yu, Whad doesh id mean, 'take it eajy for the shake of daging id
eajy"?"
"Mukyukyukyuuuu, that's for little Marisa to find out."
"Mawisha will dage id eajy for big shish!!"
"Yufufu!! Then Mawisha will dage id eajy for liddle shish!!"
"Mawisha will dage it eajy for the shake of mwommie and daddie!!"
"Yufufufu, what splended little ones. Daddy would've been so proud of
little ones!"
****
And yet now, the sickly smell coming from the cubicle next door could
mean only one thing... Reimu shook her head and mourned the loss of
Patchouli. She had tried to comfort her little ones, but she's not as
naive as the other yukkuris. Every day the voices around the yukkuris
grew weaker and weaker, and every day there would be a few less
voices. She looked at her koyukkuris slowly fading away each day,
their faces growing thinner and their energetic voices seemed like a
thing of the past.
Reimu would need to make a decision soon. She'd either need to self-
split so her little ones could eat her and survive, or wait longer to
see if help comes by. The latter option seems increasingly unlikely
with each passing minute.
=======
Finally, on the fifth day, the workers of the park were able to get
into the compound after the protesters have relented in their protest
briefly. They seemed to have finally realized that there are no
workers in the compound since the beginning of their protest, and the
yukkuris wouldn't get any food unless there's human intervention.
The gates of the cubicles finally rolled open, and less than half of
the yukkuris walked out of their cubicles. A few plopped on the
ground and died after walking out, the help coming too late.
Reimu and Patchouli were not amongst the survivors.
The three little koyukkuris walked out of their cubicles, their
tummies full and their paste filled with sorrow and emotions. They
had eaten their mother yesterday in order to survive, and she had
split herself with a smile on her face. With this meal, the mother's
experience and thoughts were passed to the koyukkuris, and they found
themselves weeping at their mothers' memories.
The joy of having the koyukkuris... was the most intense emotion that
got passed down. The sorrow at having lost father Marisa, and the
longing of the outside world were all passed down as well. They had
realized that their mother had never really took it easy, and that she
had done all she could to make sure the koyukkuris took it easy. The
rare feeling of having taken it easy for the sake of others flooded
the koyukkuris as the memories swarmed around their bean paste like
little phantom worms.
But none of that surpassed the sorrow of having to eat their own
mother to survive. On that day, they matured a little bit.
Taking it easy for the sake of taking it easy is not right, they had
learned. Their mother took it easy for her little koyukkuris and no
one else. Each and every yukkuris has a responsibility as part of a
larger group, to make sure everyone takes it easy.
"God damn.... Do a head count. Those fucking protesters killed more
yukkuris than they ever saved. Double portions today. I want a
sanitation team here double time, we need those dead yukkuris cleaned
out before they sicken any others."
The director cursed like a sailor, walking around and shouting orders
to the workers and inspecting the yukkuri cages himself. The compound
had more than three hundred yukkuris prior to the protest.
There are less than one hundred after 5 long days of fasting. Most of
the ones that have survived are koyukkuris that had parents willing to
give themselves up, and many of the orphaned koyukkuris huddled in a
little group and cried to themselves.
Other parents, not so willing to take it easy forever, had devoured
their own koyukkuris or mates. Those adult yukkuris hastily rushed to
their meal troughs, hungrily licking away at the grey sludge inside.
Despite the complete lack of taste, it was the best meal they ever
had. The director shook his head as carts of yukkuris were wheeled
out, and he shouted for the workers to dump the corpses before the
horrified protesters.
"If you dumbasses didn't block us for five days, all of these yukkuris
would still be alive. Take a picture of this and shove it up your
president's ass."
"What is going on here?!"
"We feed the yukkuris and clean their cages on a daily basis. We take
care of them. You baffoons, without doing your research, show up
across the nation at all these facilities and think that by blocking
the people from getting to work, you can 'save' these yukkuris? THIS
happens when you block them. Half of the deaths occur on day one. If
I ever get caught in a car accident, please don't try to 'save' me."
"If you would just let the yukkuris go free, this wouldn't have
happened in the first place!"
"Yeah!!"
"Treat yukkuris like you would a person!!"
"This is just justified abuse!!!"
"....!!"
"..!!!"
"..."
"....
The pointless argument continued for hours, but the yukkuris don't
care. The three little Marisa sisters huddled together in a little
corner, gazing at the rest of the famished yukkuris as they rushed to
the feeding-troughs.
"Mwommie... is gone..."
"Miss Patchouli is gone too..."
"What do we do..."
"Yun..."
"Yunn..."
"Yuuuu...."
=========
"Hey, don't make so much noise."
"You're the one shuffling your feet along!"
"Would you both shut the hell up?"
""Sorry.""
Three men dressed in dark colored clothing snuck around to the side of
the yukkuri-compound, carrying with them a few large pairs of wire and
bolt cutters.
The compounded was surrounded by two layers of fences. A full layer
of metal chain-linked fence, surrounded by a trench, and a low but
durable metal rod fence that protruded inwards to extend over the
trench at an angle. The chain-linked fence was surrounded by barbed-
wire on the top and bottom to prevent entry by humans and yukkuris
alike, and then trench and inward-extending metal rod fence was
designed to catch rain-water and prevent any escape by the yukkuris
should they make it out of the first layer.
But the three men were prepared. With a few snips from the wire and
bolt cutters, the men were inside the compound.
The protest that the activists had held in the past five days had
given these three men enough time to scout the compound very
carefully, and they mapped out the yukkuri cubicles, the gate
mechanism, as well as possible points of entry.
Thanks to the ongoing efforts of the protesters, there is nobody in
the compound pulling night shifts. So tonight, they will free all the
yukkuris in the compound and bring them where they are meant to be.
They will return to the wild, where they will thrive like the yukkuris
that they were supposed to be. They have a truck parked outside of
the camp that they will drive to a remote forest, the natural habitat
of the yukkuris.
They also have a video camera with them that will show the happiness
of the yukkuris that they rescued.
*****
"Yufu.... Yururururu...."
"... eas..."
"...zzz"
Suddenly, a loud klaxon sounded throughout the facility, indicating
the opening of the gates. The yukkuris jolted awake to this alarm,
confused by the opening of the gate in the middle of the night.
"Yu yu?"
"Mister gate?"
"But where's mister sun?"
"Yu yu? Reimu is sleepy!! Don't interrupt Reimu's beauty sleep!!"
"It's not very city-sect to wake Alice up in the middle of the night!"
"Hey yukkuris!!! Take it easy!!!"
"Yukkuris! Come down here!! We're letting you all out of this terrible
compound!!"
"Yu yu?"
"Out?"
"Reimu can leave this not-easy place?"
"Another mister human trick...?"
The yukkuris slowly filed out of the cubicles and gathered around the
three men, yu-ing and chattering to themselves excitedly and with some
reservation. The three men started forming the yukkuris into a
straight line, and the yukkuris offered little resistance. It seems
like they're fairly used to this routine.
"Achem... Take it easy and follow us outside! We'll be bringing you
to the forest, where you can take it easy in your natural
environment!"
"Yu... the... forest?"
"What about mister sludge-sludge....?"
"Reimu is going back to sleep, ze..."
"Yu yu..."
"Yu..."
"Eh? What's wrong?"
The men looked around at the uncertain faces, and wondered why the
yukkuris weren't more excited with the prospect of leaving the
compound. Some of the yukkuris began to file back into their
cubicles, unwilling to go outside where they don't have an easy place
and would need to work for their own food.
Like all other compounds, many of the yukkuris here have been
imprisoned for generations. The faint memory of the forest is
diluted and the survival skills are more or less non-existent. The
uncertainty of moving into an unfamiliar area is something these
yukkuris have not needed to deal with for years. In fact, many of
these yukkuris have no memories of their forests and caves from years
ago.
Unlike human prisons, these yukkuris have never once tasted "freedom",
so there is not much of a desire to leave the place, especially since
this compound is fairly lenient in their treatment of yukkuris. None
of their parents, nor their grandparents, nor their grand-grandparents
have ever known freedom nor the outside world. Many yukkuris have
lost their ability to survive in the wild, like the domesticated cats
and toy dogs of humans.
With the camera rolling, their plan suddenly seemed rather flawed, as
it didn't include resistance and complacency on the part of the
yukkuris. They expected it to be like a human prison, where the
prisoners would go mad at the prospect of being freed. However, they
didn't attribute this to the lack of interest and fear of the unknown
on the yukkuris' part.
"Look at these poor things, they're so afraid of humans that they're
unwilling to follow us. Don't worry little ones, you can follow us
outside. We're friends. We're easy people."
"They must've abused them so much that they're afraid of doing
anything 'wrong'. These wardens are sick bastards."
"Don't worry little ones, you're safe. Come with us... outside. To
the forest."
"Yu? Outside? Forest?"
"What ish a 'foo-eest'? Can Chen ead it?"
"There will be lots of mister trees and grass, and you can make your
nests and easy places in the places where you're meant to! There will
be lots of delicious mister munch-munch for you guys too!"
"Yu! Munch-munch!!"
"But Reimu is fine with mister sludge-sludge..."
"Yu? But easy-places just grow out of the ground..."
"Reimu's mommy and mommy's mommy has always said that..."
"There is lots of mister grass in mister exercise yard..."
Indeed there is.
The activists looked over in the direction of the exercise yard, which
resembled a small park complete with recreation equipment. Looking at
this compound from the inside.... it doesn't seem like those
concentration camps they showed in all those PETY meetings. When they
looked back, more and more yukkuris started heading back into their
cubicles. Compared to an uncertain home outside the fence, this is a
more secure place for them.
This compound has been overwhelming successful in terms of yukkuri
control. The more draconian compounds would from time to time have
riots, because of the overwhelming oppression and lack of easiness.
The more lenient compounds, like this one, employed a more subtle form
of subjugation that takes advantage of the yukkuris' laziness. They
would let the yukkuris take it easy, to a certain degree, but not
enough to trigger dosification. In this sense, the yukkuris would
think life in this compound "is not that bad", grow complacent and
have no will to leave or endanger humans ever again. Food, shelter,
and even little ones are there. What more could they want?
"Uh... well... you need to get out of here!! Don't you want to take it
easy more? This is not an easy place!! Follow us and we'll show
you!!"
"Really?..."
"How can there be a more easy place?"
"Why is Reimu's easy place not easy?"
"Country bumpkin don't bad-mouth Alice's city-sect home!!"
"Marisa is scared, ze."
"Chen doesn't get it!!!"
"DIIIIIIIICK!!!"
"Uh.. yeah! Mister... um.... humans were planning to kill all of you
tomorrow!! So follow us if you don't want to die!!"
""""""""YUUUUUUUU!?!?!"""""""""
"They starved you guys for five days and tried to kill you, but they
didn't expect you guys to survive!! So they are going to do it again!"
"""""""""YUUUUUUUUUUUUU!?!?""""""""
"Can't take it easy without mister munch-munch!!"
"Reimu doesn't want mister gate to stay shut!!"
"Yuuuuu, Reimu lost her mommy!!"
"Chen doesn't get it...."
The tiebreaker went to three little Marisas. The three little Marisas
that had lost their mother, and had inherited fond memories of the
forest and the iron-willed determination to help others take it easy.
"Yu, there is nothing for Marisa here anymore, ze."
"Marisa and her little sisters will leave this place!"
"Mawisha will go where big-shish goes!! Mawisha will help everyone
dage id eajy!!!"
"Yu... if those little ones are willing to go, then Reimu will go
too!"
"Marisa too, ze!"
"Misder, lead the way!"
The men smiled and led the yukkuris out of the compound and into the
truck.
=================
"Here you are!! The forest!!"
At the break of dawn, the activists finally reached their
destination. The yukkuris were unloaded off the truck, and they
stepped into a small forest that was very different from the home that
they were used to. A lush canopy with fingers of light piercing
through it from the early morning sun, a soft mushy ground filled with
wild grasses and flowers, damp with the morning dew and filled with
insect life. Tall trees that smelled like nothing the yukkuris ever
imagined before, an array of colors and smells that invaded the
yukkuris' olfactory senses all at once.
Some yukkuris remembered, deep down in their bean-paste, about their
ancestral homes and were thrilled to be back.
But most did not.
Many yukkuris were less than happy with the strange and damp place. A
completely unfamiliar environment that they had never seen before, and
there's no leaders in this group. There's no familiar smells nor
familiar sights, and a few of the yukkuris huddled together in fear.
The clammy moisture clung to their skin and made them feel like they
were melting.
"Where is mister munch-munch?"
"Where is Reimu's new home?"
"Where is Marisa's new easy place, ze? Mister human fork it over!!"
"Mwommie, Weimu ish hungwy!"
"What do you mean? This is your natural environment! Where you
belong!"
"Yukkuris live in forests, and here you can go hunting and make your
own nests under boulders and tree-trunks, make a little paradise of
your own! Just like in those National Geographic videos!!"
"You can form a little clan, just like you did so many years ago! One
of you can become a dosu and then the world will know that
dosuyukkuris aren't dangerous after all! They'll all know you're
friendly creatures that need to be freed from the compounds
nationwide!!"
"Yu... hunting? What's 'hunting', ze?"
"Reimu doesn't know anything about making a nest, ze!! Easy places
just grow out of the ground!"
"What's a dosuyukkuri?"
"W... What? What do you mean you don't know how to hunt? What about
all those videos?!?"
"Reimu doesn't know anything about some stupid videos!!! Just hand
over mister munch-munch!!"
"Mister! Hurry up and bring mister munch-munch, ze! Marisa is
hungry!!"
"What? We don't have any food! You gotta go hunt for it!! That's
what animals in the wild do!! Or forage!! Like go look for mushrooms
and stuff!"
"Enough joking mister!! It's Reimu's super-munch-munch time!! Reimu
needs her mister munch-munch!"
"What a not-city-sect bunch of mister humans!! Mister director
sometimes gave Alice delicious treats!! Alice wants to go back
home!!!"
"Where are the easy places?! Mister humans are liars!!! Marisa can't
take it easy at all here!!"
"Reimu wants to go home!!"
"Chen too!!! Chen doesn't understand it here!!!"
"Wh... What??? H... How can this..."
The three men looked around in panic and disbelief as the yukkuris
hopped around crying and shouting, demanding food or be brought back
home. The yukkuris are completely confused by the forest, and
intimidated by the large forest canopies, flowers and plant life that
they had never seen before. The men had not realized that a few short
years is all the yukkuris have in a lifetime, and it is rare for any
modern yukkuri to live past 2 years old in the modern day compounds.
The information on yukkuris had become painfully outdated post the DOS-
incident.
These yukkuris have undergone at least ten generations, and most of
them have become complacent in the compounds. While ten years is very
short for humans, it is an eternity for yukkuris.
The men, startled at this discovery, quickly climbed into their truck
and drove off when the yukkuris started coming closer, leaving behind
the group of confused yukkuris that they worked so hard to "rescue".
They would cut this part out of the final video.
"YUUUUU!! Mister humans left us!!!"
"What about Reimu's munch-munch!?"
"Chen doesn't get it!!! Where would Chen go to sleep!?!?"
"DICCCCKKKK!?!?!"
"Yu.... Marisa expected this all along, ze."
"Big shish.... really?"
"Of course, ze. Yukkuris have to take care of yukkuris... not mister
humans, ze."
Without any sort of leaders, or survival skills, these yukkuris are
doomed to die in the forest. Predators, poisonous plants and insect
life, exposure, rain, natural traps and dangerous terrain all worked
against the soft weak bodies of yukkuris.
The three little Marisas glanced at the panicking yukkuris, and the
eldest sister cleared her voice.
"Achem... Take it easy!!!"
""""""""Take it easy!!!!""""""""
"Marisa knows what to do!!! So every yukkuri listen up!!!...."
