Can yTEX be used to NLP Spanish language clinical texts?  GATES has a spanish language plugin, but I a complete noob to this science and would appreciate any guidance you can provide.

HI Sanjay,

YTEX is based on cTAKES, can cTAKES is very English-centric - all the statistical nlp models have been trained on English clinical text, and all the rule-based annotators (e.g. the tokenizer) are made for English text.

To make this work on Spanish, the cTAKES sentence splitter, chunker, etc. need to be retrained on Spanish text, and the tokenizer needs to be rewritten to work with Spanish.

Hey Vijay!

Thanks for the reply and information.  So, per your knowledge, are there any NLP projects that are multi-lingual?  I saw on sourceforge that GATES has a spanish language plugin.  I plan to experiment with it when I get a chance, but if you know of any spanish specific software (open source or otherwise), please let me know.

Thanks...

-S
