Prompt:
I read Downbelow Station for the third time this year, and this is the time it finally clicked (I guess I'm finally old enough to tell the bureaucrats apart!) Mallory is convinced that Mazian and Tom Edger are an item. If you're willing to go there, I'd love to see either Mazian/Edger or the uneasy dance of Edger/Mazian/Mallory. What drew them together, back when things were good? What keeps Edger and Mazian together, after the events of Downbelow Station? Do Mallory and Mazian find ways to communicate (or attack each other) once they're no longer allies? Is Edger as forbidding in a relationship as he seems from a distance? How do the captains' various subordinates feel about their hostilities and entanglements? Alternatively, what were these characters like as junior officers? How did they rise to hold their current power?
If you're interested in more general worldbuilding with Mallory or the Mazianni in the background, I'm down for that too. Maybe, off in some dark system, the Mazianni encounter the kyo from Foreigner or one of the aliens from the Chanur series? Maybe Mallory has to figure out how to cope with bureaucracy, now that she's tied to a single system? Maybe you want to write Mallory and/or Mazian as an antagonist, and describe someone escaping from their clutches? Maybe you want to riff on the frequent comparisons of Alliance-Union with the Expanse, and describe the collision of characters from those two universes?

I love all the tiny details of this world and the way canon compares and contrasts different aspects of each story. I'd love to see another facet. Maybe you'd like to riff on Vietnamese or Chinese history, literature, or folk tales in a way that hasn't come up in canon yet? Maybe you see a way to work a different set of legends, such as Arthurian romance, into this framework? Some of the animals in canon are supernatural variants of creatures that still exist in our world, and some of them are prehistoric. What would it be like to hear a story from an animal we think of as ordinary? What sorts of tales would your favorite prehistoric creature tell, had it survived?What kinds of stories do the birds tell each other, when the humans aren't listening?
On a completely different tack, I always love to see things IN SPACE. What would the canon approach to collecting stories look like among asteroid miners or on another planet's moon?
