Volunteering

Reading Buddies: Teen Volunteers

For ages 13-18. If you like working with children, enjoy reading, are a fluent English speaker and want to help emerging readers, we need you! Reading Buddies teen volunteers mentor children in Grades 2-4 with reading practice, literacy-based activities and fun. We provide training and, upon completion, a reference letter outlining your volunteer hours.

 

1:45-3:00 pm and/or 3:15-4:30 pm

Big Buddy Training Session

For ages 13-18. Have you registered to be a Big Buddy in the Reading Buddies program? Is this the first time you have volunteered as a Big Buddy? If so, you must attend a Big Buddy Training Session.

Tech Buddies: Teen Volunteers

For ages 13-18. Volunteer using your skills with computers and other new technologies, and connect with someone in your community. Teens earn volunteer hours and help adults with their questions about computers and gadgets.

Button Making: Teen Volunteers

For ages 13-18. Get your button on and earn volunteer hours too!  Help out at GVPL events by operating our easy-to-use button making machine.  You will be in charge of stamping out buttons for people, and you can make one for yourself too.

Teen Summer Writing Contest: If Only They Had Known

For ages 13-18. Enter your original short story, poem, or song based on this year’s theme: If Only They Had Known. If your entry is selected by the judging panel, you will win a gift certificate for the store of your choice, up to $100 for first prize! Poetry Workshop for Teens with Aysia Law

For ages 13-18. Join Aysia Law, Victoria’s first Youth Poet Laureate, for a two-part workshop with writing games and exercises to get you started, followed up with peer critiques, finishing touches and a class show!

For ages 13-18. Join Jody Carrow, Story Studio Writing Coach and Editor of the Claremont Review, the international magazine for youth and young adult creative writers, for a two-part workshop. Experience mad writing and benefit from her ninja-style editing process.

For ages 13-18. Make your own movie using industry methods during this two-day workshop. Learn how to write a script, create a storyboard, shoot scenes and digitally edit and upload your short film.

Makerspaces and Hackerspaces

Hackerspaces Demo Night

Everyone welcome. Join members of Victoria Makerspace to learn about hackerspaces: technology playgrounds that are open to everyone. We'll demonstrate a 3D printer that makes physical objects out of computer models and we'll demonstrate how to safely cut things with lasers! Register online or call your local branch for more information.

Makerspaces for Teens

For ages 13-18. Join members of Victoria Makerspace to design an object to be cut on a laser cutter, a high-precision cutting and engraving machine. Learn how to use Inkscape, an open source vector graphics program, to create your design. Then, watch the laser do the cutting and take your object home.

Crafty Stuff – By Teens for Teens

 

Knit Wits for Teens

For ages 13-18. Learn how to knit a simple neckwarmer and help others by donating your finished project to a local shelter. Join local knitter extraordinaire Nicole Bottles for coaching and inspiration. We will supply the instructions, yarn, and knitting needles. A great project for beginner knitters!
