Sexual Exploitation / Human Trafficking Workshop April 28, 2011
What are the risks that our youth are facing in our community, and how do we as service providers respond?
The West Shore RCMP Community Policing Section and Cst. Theresa TUTTLE with Mobile Youth Service Team have partnered to conduct a one day Sexual Exploitation/Human Trafficking awareness workshop for police and partnering agencies.
The workshop will be held April 28, 2011 from 8:30am -4:30 pm at the West Shore RCMP Detachment 3rd floor training room, located at 698 Atkins Ave., Victoria, BC. There is no cost associated to the workshop, and coffee, tea and refreshments will be provided during breaks. You will be responsible for your own lunch with the choice of several restaurants nearby.
There will be various speakers inclusive of the 1.5 hour presentation by Cpl. BINDRA from the E Division Human Trafficking Unit. The emphasis will be on local issues surrounding sexual exploitation with our youth, and trends seen within the Greater Victoria area.

10:10 -10:40 PEERS – A former sex worker from Peers will share her story into how she was recruited into the sex trade.
10:40-12:00 Cpl. Jassy BINDRA with the RCMP Human Trafficking Section - speaking about new legislation

13:00-2:30 Dianne SOWDEN Children of the Street Society. SOWDEN lost her 13 year old daughter to the streets of Vancouver. She will discuss her experiences with trying to help her daughter leave the sex trade and the current trends of sexual exploitation that our youth are facing.
Health Break
2:45 to 4:00 TCO2 - Taking Care of Yourself and Taking Care of Others Too, a group that attends schools and does presentations to youth on the issues of sexual exploitation. After the presentation there will be time for discussion. This will give an opportunity for those attending the workshop to share their thoughts on possible solutions and how we can work together as a community to protect our youth.
