Hey all!
Hope you are all enjoying some time off and are still celebrating the awesome match!
I just wanted to share something with you I learned about disability insurance options that Penn and many other residency programs offer. Penn offers an individual disability insurance policy with discounted rates to all new interns. It is own-occupation until age 65, non-cancelable, guaranteed-renewable, with 3% COLA, catastrophic rider, and guaranteed ability to cover up to $15,000 per month. You pay premiums yourself so it is not taxed and it is portable wherever you go. I talked to Penn and they said this policy is usually cheaper for residents. Apparently several residencies are beginning to offer this sort of benefit too, and it is most likely cheaper than the policies offered from Jesse/Neil. Also a plus - no extensive medical exam or underwriting (I think it’s just a simple application), i.e. no increased premiums for rock climbing/mountain climbing in the past two years! I talked to Penn residents and pretty much everyone chooses this. Hopefully your programs do too!
Also, our group coverage from Yale does not expire until August 31st, so you could definitely apply for both, see which is cheaper and choose that (your coverage won’t lapse and you are eligible for the discounts until then). Also, I know that independent brokers do have some leeway in lowering prices so if you show them a competing plan, they might reduce the premiums a bit. I felt like Jesse wasn’t totally transparent about other options (these independent brokers apparently make tons of commission on personal policies - like your first year of premiums and then a cut for the rest of your payment period!), so dug into a little research myself.
Hope this is helpful to some of you :)
Cheers,
Sasha
