Hi,

Can we consider following features for ySchool?

Student Management
Staff Management
Subject Management
Leave management
Inventory management
Finance management and Cheque signing
Time table
Societies and clubs
Events
Document repo
e-Learning
Webmail client

We may need to develop a central system that integrate all the schools, probably which will be managed by provincial offices or central administration.
Individual schools can install and use ySchool system and they also should be able to sync it with central system.
As we discussed at the very beginning, disconnected mode is an important feature - IMHO.

In addition to that please make sure that the ySchool let users to type content in Local languages.

Let me give more troubles in future as well :)

Thanks
Sarves

@Sarves

I don’t think we need to include

·         Inventory management

·         Finance management and Cheque signing

As they would be less irrelevant for school management system.

And by the way both the aforesaid modules could add lots of complexities and we would end up doing stock control, audit and accounting systems for the schools. Let’s avoid it.

If anyone interested let them fork out and try them out. But we shouldn’t invest time on it I guess.

1.       What about examination and marking ? shouldn’t we have a section for that OR is that covered under Subject Management ?

2.       e-Learning is good but it’s a topic by itself, wondering if it would be too much for the first version. We could probably have a cut down version

3.       What is document repo ?

Bala

Dear All,

It is good to hear the initiative about the functionality to be included in the yschool system.

What Sarves have mention the functions seems to be necessary in one or other ways. But how do we going to deliver it. what would be the system architecture? do we need to modularize the applications? if so how what are the modules to be included? how we going to integrated these modules?

There are many questions to be answer? I would like to suggest to come up with a system model or system architecture that should show the modules. the we would able to prioritize modules and add those in the system.

I have read few document on the internet related to this case, i hope it may helpful too. My suggestion is to put the system architecture in document so everyone will be in same understanding.

Thank you
Ramesh

Dear Bala, Ramesh and all,

Of course the finance module and the inventory control are complex module. But we might not implement them. We can reuse if there are good modules.

Same with e-Learning. All the Universities and some schools are using a e-Learning system called Moodle. We might need to develop a bridge to integrate Moodle with our ySchool core. Even Ministry promotes Moodle for Schools.

Like wise we can reuse good things.

Yes Bala, Student Management System and Subject Management system will have grading part as well. Anyhow the Architects will decide where to include grading.

Also we might not implement all these in the 1st phase, but it will good if we can consider these requirement in the 1st phase so that we do not make any unnecessary assumptions - IMHO!

Sarves

Hi All,
Went through the above discussion. Kindly let me give my views on
this.
It s high time for us to come up with a high level scope for ySchool
Phase I. you may continue the discussion on the overall scope but its
important for us to kick off the project with some prioritized
development.
We have to do ySchool’s first release at least in 6 months time and if
I have not mistaken we are almost there with the project team too.

As per my discussion with Jason, we high levelly decided to include
the following to Phase I of ySchool,
• Student Management
• Staff Management
• Subject Management
• Grade Management
• Time table
• Notice Board

Please feel free to add anything to the list if it is really critical
for phase I. Otherwise we can take this as the finalized scope and
proceed with the project.

@ JK, I think Vanaja can concentrate on phase I scope and get us the
detailed requirements soon.

Regards,
Dhanushan

Dhanushan

Looks good. I am bit curious to know the depth and scope of each of the bulleted point.

Probably a detailed spec would help me understand them better. In time we should have one. I'll anxiously wait for it.

One question though. Who are the users of the proposed system ?

Bala

Hi Dhanushan,

Sorry, I wasn't online yesterday ..

1) Change the notice board to Academic Forum (This should include all the web2.0 like features, quite frankly fb like features)
2) For a project plan's point of view, Introduce the "Crash Course" also into the plan.

Currently available development resources
1) Jason
2) Gayathiry
3) JK

Do we have any other volunteers?

BTW we have about 6~8 people wanting to join the yschool development team. We are yet to finalize the team. During the Easter break, I am planning to work on the course. Jason think about it too..

Hi Bala,
We are yet to detail the requirements. Hopefully we can come up
with it soon. We are targetting the scools(Students & School Staff)
only on this phase.

@ JK,
Its really great you can work during easter holidays(April
6,7,8,9?)!!! on the other hand we really need to expedite things :).
Will try to get atleast a scetch plan before that.

In my opinion notice board will be useful as some important
activities, holidays, etc can be posted. FB like forum development may
take considerable time too right? what do u think?
If I have not mistaken there will be atleast 2 more students be on
board. I need to know all your development time allocations for
planning.

Can we get Vanaja also to start with some detailed requirement
gathering? We can commence the development but critically need to
start on the requirements gathering too.

JFYI, Ill be mostly working on ySchool during morning hours (6:30 -
7:30 AM). Generally expect my reply during this time.

Regards,
Dhanushan

@Dhanushan

If you had followed yesterday's mail between me and JK, we decided someone from us start on this. Hence I thought to start on this ASAP. To come up at least with a draft which could be modified and maintained by one of us OR all of us.

My plan is to use what Vanaja has done so far instead of starting everything from scratch.

We are having the weekly today, join if you can. We could allocate some time to discuss this if possible.

What would be more important is the scope and depth of each of what you have listed and the timelines we require to implement them.  Let’s talk about it.

By the way you work at odd times men J

@Ramesh

I don’t think we have time to go to schools and investigate and find out all the requirements. Hopefully Vanaja would have done some preliminary work on this and lets use that to get a draft document ready and thereafter continuously improve it.

And now that we'll be having some interns working on this fulltime, lets get them to do this business if we require any detailed requirements.

Since most of the schools do follow more or less the same kind of operations, I don’t expect to see a big change in our basic requirements.

Regards

Bala

Hi Bala,
3 things,
1. I will not be able to join today. Will try to have a chat with u
guys during this week
2. I saw your yesterday's discussion, but i was not sure whether you
were to do the requirement or to overlook or something. Its great to
have you for this. We dont need to start from scratch, its good to
continue from where Vanaja has left.
3. I mentioned the odd time, so you can generally expect my replys
during that time :)

Regards,
Dhanushan
