York Road Partnership Members & Neighbors,
We hope you can join us
this Wednesday, November 5, 7:15 pm for the
York Road Partnership General Meeting at Govans Boundary United Methodist Church at 5210 York Road (enter from the back parking lot through the red door on the right
as shown on street view here). You can also
register for the Zoom option if you need to.
We'll have some updates from our committees. In particular, our Youth Development Committee has been talking about pushing for the redevelopment of DeWees Park Recreation Center, which was built in 1953 and is one of the oldest in the City. With the loss of the recreation center at Walter P. Carter Elementary/Middle School as that school was redeveloped, DeWees is our one resource like that on the corridor, and we think young people on our corridor deserve a bigger and nicer facility.
And then we'll have updates on our listening along the corridor, and we'll want to hear from you specifically about new ideas for 5723 York Road, the former Flight Restaurant/Fields Old Trail/Maenner's Market. You have heard before that we wanted to partner with Invest York Road to buy and renovate the property for a new, larger restaurant. But we learned we can't use State bond funds in that kind of partnership, and the restaurant business is challenging these days.
As a result, York Road Partnership is exploring purchasing the property with some of the State bond funds awarded to YRP and looking together with the York Road Collaborative at some alternative uses. Could part of the space be an office for the Collaborative and possibly meeting space for communities? Could a smaller corner food space be less risky and help liven up that corner? Could the second floor be apartments, perhaps marketed to new teachers at nearby Govans Elementary School?
