Final Urban Land Institute (ULI) Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) Report:  Last June York Road stakeholders were invited to offer their insight, vision and wisdom with the Urban Land Institute (ULI) who studied and made recommendations to strengthen the York Road commercial corridor from 39th Street in the City to Towson University in the County.  Over 200 area stakeholders were present for discussions and recommendations.

The ULI process was a collaborative project with Baltimore City and County, Govanstowne Business Association, York Road Partnership, Loyola University Maryland, Notre Dame of Maryland University, Baltimore Development Corporation, among others.  We hope the ULI recommendations encourage enhanced partnership between our public and private partners.

If you have any questions and/or are interested in this information being presented to your organization, please feel free to respond back to YorkRoadP...@gmail.com.  Your input and perspective is very much welcome and needed as we continue to move forward.

Mentors Needed:  Higher Achievement is currently recruiting Mentors for our out of school programs that aim to close the opportunity gap for underserved middle school youth in Baltimore City. We believe that talent is everywhere, but opportunity unfortunately is not. We envision a world where every student’s potential and promise is realized, regardless of their circumstances.

Higher Achievement’s proven model provides a rigorous, year-round learning environment, caring role models, and a culture of high expectations, resulting in college-bound scholars with the character, confidence, and skills to succeed.

The success of our program is dependent on the willingness of the Baltimore community members to contribute two hours of their time once a week.  We operate out of 3 centers: Collington Square Elementary/Middle School in East Baltimore, Arundel Elementary/Middle School in Cherry Hill, and Lakeland Elementary/Middle School in Westport.

For more information: Adam T. Smith, Manager of Volunteer Recruitment, Higher Achievement Baltimore, 1500 Union Avenue, Suite 2600, Baltimore, MD 21211, (410) 752-7753-office, (410) 856-1329-direct , www.higherachievement.org

Location:  Roland Park Country School, 5204 Roland Avenue

Cost $10 which is being donated by Dr. Beilenson to RPCS

Dr. Peter Beilenson, who served for over a decade as the Baltimore City Health Commissioner, now serves as the CEO and

President of Evergreen Health, a new health option for Baltimoreans. Inspired by the popular HBO series, The Wire, Dr. Beilenson

wrote Tapping into the Wire in 2012. He also developed and teaches an undergraduate course at John Hopkins University. In both

the book and the course, Dr. Beilenson uses the framework of The Wire to explore drugs, violence and poverty in our city. His

presentation will look at major, current public health issues from his unique perspective. He will help us examine old problems with new

insight and offer creative thoughts on efforts to mitigate the problems. Dr. Beilenson’s work supports his hopeful belief that there

are ways we can better address the needs of all city residents. Dr. Beilenson will also speak about how the Affordable Care Act has

impacted our health choices in Maryland and innovative services and options offered by the non-profit, local Evergreen Health Co-op.

Evergreen Health is a new insurance and care option for Marylanders.

Saturday, April 26Mayor’s Spring Clean-Up  8:00am-1:00pm

Get Ready to Sweep Away the Winter Blues…….

This is the 15th annual spring cleaning event, and it continues to grow in popularity, with neighborhoods in every part of the City sweeping, raking, planting and painting.

To participate, community associations should organize now and provide their cleanup location(s), planned activities, and anticipated numbers of participants to us by calling 311.  Roll-off containers will be available for debris collection on a first call to 311 basis. Limited bags will be made available to participating communities. Pick-up of these filled bags will occur on Monday, April 28.

This year DPW is celebrating ECOFEST 2014 at Druid Hill Park which also occurs on April 26. The kick-off for the Spring Cleanup will also be held in that park at 8:30 a.m.

Residents and property owners have an added incentive to get involved. The Maryland Stormwater Fee has now gone into effect, and one way to receive credits to reduce your fee is to participate in organized cleanups such as this. Additional information on this will be provided when you register.

To learn more about cleanups and other DPW activities please consult your DPW Calendar or go to http://publicworks.baltimorecity.gov/. To learn more about the Maryland Stormwater Fee credit program visit www.cleanwaterbaltimore.org and click the stormwater tab.
