For Immediate Release 3/6/2018
Baltimore— Today, Baltimore City State’s Attorney
Marilyn Mosby released the 2017 Annual Report for the Office of the State’s
Attorney for Baltimore City (SAO), which highlights the agency’s performance in
many key areas. A digital copy of the 2017 Annual Report can be found here.
According to the report, the SAO prosecuted over 41,000
cases, including nearly 3,800 felony cases—achieving a 92% felony conviction
rate. The agency also introduced the Narcotics Unit—to combat the opioid
crisis—which secured an impressive 98% conviction rate. Additionally, the
report highlights the conviction of all 12 of the 12 defendants designated
Public Enemy #1 by the Baltimore Police Department since 2015 who have been
brought to trial, resulting in six life sentences and more than 700 years in
prison.
As the SAO continues to identify ways to best support
victims and witness of crime, the report details the Office’s ability to double
the size of the Victim/Witness Services Unit; relocate 125 victims and
witnesses; and raise more than $12,000 for the Victims’ Emergency
Fund.
The report highlights the 2017 launch of Community Court
Watch, a web-based tool that allows citizens to track case information for
crimes occurring in their neighborhoods, as a means to restore the community’s
faith in the criminal justice system through accessibility and transparency.
Additionally, the report shares the SAO’s various efforts to
invest in Baltimore City’s youth. In 2017, the SAO partnered with the Mayor’s
Office of Employment Development to pay the third class of Junior State’s
Attorneys program through YouthWorks, expanded the Great Expectations Program
to three schools, and engaged approximately 2,500 Baltimore City youth during
its Summer #PopUp event series.
“The progress we’ve made over the past year is undeniable,”
said State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby. “We are committed to restoring the
community’s faith in the criminal justice system; enacting systemic reforms
within the criminal justice system; putting away violent repeat offenders; and
most importantly, delivering one standard of justice no matter one’s race,
religion, sex, occupation or zip code. This report highlights our efforts to
make progress on those priorities.”
According to State’s Attorney Mosby, the Annual Report
serves as a comprehensive summation of the work the SAO has done in 2017 to
further its core mission of delivering justice and ensuring public safety for
the residents and communities of Baltimore City. It is an opportunity for the
public to understand all of the work the SAO has done and is doing, as well as
the innovations it has pursued to make prosecutions smarter, fairer, and more
effective in Baltimore.
