Postdoctoral positions in Nutritional Epidemiology



Professor Sangita Sharma’s Aboriginal and Global Health Research
Group, in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta, is
currently accepting applications for two postdoctoral positions.
Postdoctoral fellows will join Professor Sharma’s research team in
conducting research combining sciences, nutritional epidemiology,
health promotion, community-based interventions and dietary assessment
methodologies for multi-ethnic populations nationally and
internationally. Current research involves dietary assessment of
nutritional and physical activity interventions to improve dietary
adequacies among populations undergoing nutrition transition such as
Aboriginal populations in the Canadian Arctic and Alaska, First
Nations, Apaches, Navajo, Africa, Brazil, and Hawaii. The team
performs research to determine diet-disease association through
dietary assessment and then develops and evaluates community-based,
dietary and lifestyle intervention studies for obesity and chronic
disease prevention. All research, grants and publications are
multidisciplinary and multi-ethnic, including nutrient-gene
interaction, ethnic differences in health outcomes, and major chronic
diseases.
Successful candidates’ will function as a junior investigator,
participating fully in research and related scholarly activities and
will be encouraged and receive guidance to apply for independent
salary and research funding.
Duties will include:
 working closely and cooperatively with project staff
 carrying out high-level research activities including design and
implementation of grants and letters of intent
 designing and implementing research methods, objectives and
activities related to community-based participatory research projects
 leading a team in writing peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts
 participating in the training and mentorship of graduate students
 maintaining, developing and supervising funded research programs
 consulting with principal investigators, co-principal investigators,
project partners and staff

Ideal candidates will have:
 Ph.D in Epidemiology, Nutritional Sciences, or related Public Health
science.
 Ph.D completed within 0-10 years
 experience working with Aboriginal, ethnic, and/or vulnerable
populations and knowledge of cultural protocol is an asset
 at least a beginning record of publication (3 publications in
preparation or submitted)
 a research program development plan highly competitive for
provincial and national funding competitions for postdoctoral awards
 excellent English written and oral communication skills
 data management skills for the preparation of research papers and
grant proposals
 strong analytical, critical thinking, organization, and leadership
skills
 ability to work both independently and as part of a team
 excellent networking skills and sensitivity, in order to liaise with
community partners, co-principal investigators and internal and
external team members
 advanced knowledge of epidemiological information, dietary analysis
software packages, and experience with statistical analysis and
spreadsheets.
 experience in community-based participatory and intervention
research.
 self-motivation, initiative and appreciation of the benefits and
challenges of working in remote communities.
