General Security Concerns:

Although some 10,000 police officers will be deployed throughout Nairobi, along with over 10,000 members of the National Youth Service, the crowds may be targets for both internal (pick pockets, thieves)  and external threats (terrorist attacks).  Security personnel may make preventive arrests in Nairobi's troubled Eastleigh, Majengo and Pangani neighbourhoods before the Pope's arrival.

Advice:

·         Allow considerable extra time to reach destinations in central Nairobi during the papal visit as unannounced street closures are possible if security scares occur.

·         Strictly avoid any demonstrations; security personnel may act quickly and use force to prevent unrest.

·         Consider minimizing public movements while His Holiness is in Nairobi unless attending papal events.

·         Avoid all soft targets like malls, bars and restaurants, churches, high end hotels and other high profile places.

·           Carry your ID with you – chances are that you will at some point be asked for it.

Advice for motorists:

·         Police plan to shut out all automobile movement in Nairobi during official functions in Nairobi City on Thursday November 26. Nairobi Central Business District will be completely shut to all vehicles.

·         The center of the activity will be the University of Nairobi, where there will be an open-air mass on Thursday. All those attending will walk to the venue.

·         The no-go boundaries are Globe roundabout, Riverside, the Museum Hill interchange, the Kenya National Library Headquarters on Ngong Road, Bunyala Road roundabout on Mombasa Road. From Hurlingam Valley Road there will be no entry beyond Silver Springs roundabout, State house road will be cut at Dennis Pritt Road crossroads at State House Gate D. Arboretum Road will not be in use.

·         Motorists attending the function can park at Don Bosco Catholic Church, Nyayo Stadium and Capital Centre. From Ngong Road park at Don Bosco, St George's Primary and Girls' Secondary School. Motorists on Waiyaki Way will find parking at Loreto Convent Msongari, Jaffrey Club, St Austin's Catholic Church, Lavington Primary School, Strathmore School (all in Lavington), Consolata Shrine and St Mark's Church (in Westlands).

·         Other Roads within Nairobi outskirts will be open.

Regards.
