“Fulfilling magical wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses.”

Executive Director Report

We were sad to learn at the March board meeting that Board Member Ken Stanecki needed to resign from the board due to relocation for his job.   We are sad to see him go but happy that he needs to be closer to family in the Midwest.  Ken joined the board in 2013 and became an active member of the Finance Committee.  Ken also worked to bring a wonderful partnership with Round Table Pizza to our chapter as well as others.  Round Table contributed to MAW through a golf tournament, a wish star promotion, adopting wishes and hosting parties for wish children to celebrate their wishes.  Here’s a snapshot of what Ken helped make possible.

  • 15 wish adoptions and Welcome Home Wish Parties hosted (6 from our chapter)
  • $189,000 total giving (incl. golf tournament and wish star sales) -- $77,300 (our chapter)
  • Additional $22,500 from straight AAW ($15,000 our chapter)
  • Grand total: $211,500 ($92,300 our chapter)

Thank you for your service Ken, you will be missed!

Batkid Related News:

On March 12th, New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros, formally announced their intentions of acquiring the worldwide theatrical release rights to Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World, as well as their intention to work with Julia Roberts on the remake. This news was covered by Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Yahoo TV, KRON, NBC Bay Area, and CBS, among others.

YPAC Jr.:

Our next meeting will be March 29th, by conference call, to discuss the event they are planning, “The Amazing Race for Wishes” on April 19th in Golden Gate Park. Their goal is to raise $7,000 for Make-A-Wish! On March 7th, 18 members of the group plus their friends and parents were treated to a tour of the San Jose Shark Tank by YPAC member Heather Hooper. A big thank you to Heather for arranging this! We are always looking for board, advisory and YPAC members who would be willing to be a guest speaker, provide a tour of their workplace, etc.

Wishes in Wine Country

Friday and Saturday May 15th & 16th

Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards (Friday evening at Kosta Browne Winery)

Tickets are selling fast – reserve yours today by contacting Amy: (415) 290-0028, aham...@sfwish.org.

Don your “croquet whites” (which or khaki, with an optional “pop of color”) and join us for a picturesque day in wine country!  It beings with the Grand Tasting on the lawns of Sonoma-Cutrer’s manicured croquet courts.  The Grand Tasting from 2:30-5:30 features over 40 food and wine tasting stations, a fantastic silent auction, the opportunity to try your hand at croquet (or to lounge in your cabana and watch others play) and so much more.  New this year – those with cabanas will enjoy early entry at 2pm (allowing time to settle into your cabana and grab a glass of chardonnay before the Tasting opens).  The Tasting is followed by the exquisite Sunset Dinner from 5:30-9pm, where you’ll watch the sun go down on the croquet courts in the comfort of the temperature-controlled terrace tent, while enjoying a farm to table-style wine country meal, wonderful wines, a spirited live auction and dancing under the stars.  And back this year – the popular Friday evening wine reception from 5:30-7:30pm at the very exclusive Kosta Browne Winery in Sebastopol – your chance to taste some of the most coveted wines around, and get a peek into this award-winning winery as we kick off a weekend for wishes.  Tickets and more information available at www.wishesinwinecountry.com.

SEARS Hometown & Outlet Stores

SEARS Hometown & Outlet Stores (SHOS) conducted a 2014 holiday season customer donation campaign that activated in SEARS Outlet, Appliance & Hardware and Home Appliance Showroom stores throughout the U.S. Although the minimum was $150,000, SHOS raised more than $522,000 nationally! Our local store in San Leandro was the top fundraising store collecting more than $7,000 in donations. They have adopted a wish, complete with impressive enhancements.

Subaru

Subaru of America, Inc. recently donated $2,239,313 to Make-A-Wish as a result of its incredibly successful 7th Annual “Share the Love” event, a campaign that ran from Nov. 20, 2014 – Jan. 2, 2015. Make-A-Wish was one of four national charities that benefited from the campaign, in which Subaru donated $250 for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased during the campaign to participating charities selected by the purchaser.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Make-A-Wish has been a participant in the Subaru “Share the Love” event.

Through its participation, Subaru has donated more than $6,800,000 to Make-A-Wish over the last four years. These funds have helped grant 880 wishes.

Additionally, local Subaru dealers support our chapter by sponsoring our events: Wine & Wishes, Wishes in Wine Country and Walk for Wishes.  Thank you Subaru!

Black Bear Diner:

During the month of December, Bay Area Black Bear Diner locations not only gave $1 to Make-A-Wish from select desserts sold at their restaurants, they also hosted over 21 wish families as part of their “Save Room For A Wish” campaign.  This translated into $85,247.01 (including a $25,000 one-time gift) donated to our chapter, alone.  Thank you to Black Bear Diner and its employees for their continuing support of Make-A-Wish over the years!
