Seven year old Monterey native Lizzy was diagnosed with a neurologic disorder right when she turned five, and her chemotherapy lasted until the end of 2015. Lizzy’s favorite subject in school is art and she wants to be an artist when she grows up. Her wish is a way for her to get an early view of that life: Lizzy asked to work with an artist to create a painting, and have it hang in a gallery. On August 6th, her wish will come true.
On June 21st and 22nd, Lizzy and her family traveled to San Francisco to begin the wish. For two days, Lizzy worked one-on-one with an artist at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) to create three separate acrylic paintings on canvas. She started the day shopping for art supplies with her instructor, then received a custom-made pink smock with her name on it to use during the lesson. June 21st happened to be her 7th birthday and the day that SFAI had planned an opening reception for the staff’s art show. As a result, Lizzy got to unveil her first painting in front of a large gathering there, and they celebrated her birthday with treats in her honor. The following day, she created two additional paintings with her instructor.
To complete her wish, Lizzy’s three paintings will be hung on Saturday, August 6th at the Bennett Gallery in Carmel. See below for the opening reception details if you would like to attend! No RSVP required.
