Indian Government to form National Youth Advisory Council
Taking forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on 29th July 2015 said that a National Youth Advisory Council was being set up to advise the government of youth issues.
The Asia Region Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting (AsR-CYMM) was held in New Delhi, on 28-30 July 2015. The meeting was officially opened by Hon Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

Speaking at the Meeting, he said: "Facilitating youth participation is the main objective of National Youth Policy."
Sonowal also said that the theme of the conference, "Youth Participation at the Heart of Sustainable Development" was very significant and added that "in India, about 65 per cent of the population is under 35 years of age."
During his address, Sonowal said the main challenge before the leaders is to enable youths to realize their full potential and contribute to the development of their nations.
All eight member countries from the Commonwealth Asia region attended the AsR-CYMM, of which five were led at the Ministerial level. Delegates included Ministers, senior government officials and youth representatives, as well as youth development stakeholders and experts.
In recognition of the important contribution of young people as partners in regional and national development, delegates considered recommendations submitted by the Youth Leaders Forum of the AsR-CYMM, particularly on decent employment, entrepreneurship and skills development, professionalising youth work, peace building, strengthening national youth participation structures, and developing and implementing National Youth Policies.
Young People in National and Global Development Agendas
Youth ministers agreed strategies/key actions to ensure youth empowerment and development priorities are included in national and regional development frameworks, especially in light of the new SDGs.
Ministers agreed to advocate for adequate financing for youth development at sub-national, national and regional levels.
Youth Employment, Skills Development and Entrepreneurship
Ministers reiterated that economic empowerment and entrepreneurship are critical for growth and as a solution to unemployment.
Ministers agreed to strengthen skills training education relevant to the existing and future needs of labour markets, including partnerships with industry, and utilization of existing education and training infrastructures, to enhance employability of young people and economic development.
Ministers noted that life skills are just as important as technical skills, in particular in the context of preparing for an unknown economic future. They 3 also noted the importance of identifying different but equally valuable educational pathways to meet young people’s diverse needs and aspirations.
Youth Participation in Governance
Ministers committed to enhancing youth participation in decision-making, as well as youth participation in the design, implementation and monitoring of government programmes, by taking steps to include targets for youth representation, through legitimate structures, in relevant governance and decision-making structures at national, regional and international levels.
Ministers noted the resource constraints faced by youth-led and youth-serving organizations, especially National Youth Councils and student associations, and agreed to provide greater support for building their capacity through legislation, financial assistance and/or other measures.
Youth and Peaceful Societies
Ministers reflected on the promotion of peace, harmony and social cohesion, as a counter to conflict and extremism, and a force for social and economic development. Ministers committed to taking a collective, regional approach to peace building, and resolution of conflicts and disputes, noting that young people and youth ministers can play a leadership role in promoting friendship, understanding and unity, in the Asia region and as a global exemplar.

Gandhi Camp is not your average summer camp. Rather, it’s a truly unique experience. Led by Dr. S.N. Subba Rao, more commonly referred to as Bhaiji, the camp teaches Gandhian principles. Kids grades 5-12 learn Gandhiji’s values such as self-discipline, religious equality, and of course non-violence, but any kid can memorize and recite a list of vows.
Gandhi Camp not only teaches the principles, but also how to live them out when we return home. For instance, removing untouchability may seem obsolete in modern-day American society, but nightly discussions bring forth marginalized individuals and simple actions we can take to dedicate our services in order to bridge the gap between us and them. One of my favorite aspects of the camp is how Bhaiji teaches religious equality. I was raised in a Hindu household, educated at a Catholic High School, and had attended my fair share of various other spiritual ceremonies. In my mind, I was already well educated on the practices of different religions. But each time I return, Bhaiji shows me all that I have yet to learn. Each evening, we recite prayers from the world’s major religions. Each morning as we walk out to the tool sheds, a mural depicting each of the symbols from each religion welcomes us. The more I learn from Bhaiji’s fables and experiences, the more I realize how similar the religions are. At its core, each religion preaches the same set of principles—love, peace, mercy, faith. So why do we still see elevated levels of religious turmoil and violence in the world? – (from article of Divya Desale published in Indian Currents)
