Bharat Jodo Movement Yatra Concluded
Chief Minister Nabam Tuki described the month-long 3rd Bharat Jodo Movement (BJM) a great mission to spread the spirit of unity and message of universal love and peace.
CM has flagged off the
BJM at Indira Gandhi Park, Itanagar on 14th March 2013. Tuki, flanked by Finance
Minister Chowna Mein, Agriculture Minister Setong Sena.
Gandhian Dr SN Subba Rao, (Director, National Youth Project, Chairman, ICYO) said that every Indian including the younger generation needs to work with responsibility while discharging his/her duty.
“Our India is great. Every Indian should live with pride and discharge their duty with responsibility reflecting the greatness of our great motherland”. Sena, associated with the National Youth Project, recalled the path breaking initiatives of the voluntary organization that has spread its activities to 42 nations. ‘Bharat Jodo’ slogan rent the air as the chief minister handed over the soil of the ‘Land of Rising sun’ to the Gandhians to carry it throughout the nation symbolizing ‘Bharat ek mitti hai, ek desh hai aur ham sab ek hai (India is a single land, one nation and all Indians same).
Recalling the great Gandhian Baba Amte, who had launched the 2nd BJM from Itanagar in 1989 that was flagged off by then governor R D Pradhan, Dr Rao, lovingly called Bhaiji, said Gandhiji, who had lived for only four months after India attained independence had desired that sensibility was the need for the nation to remain united and great.
BJM yatra reached Guwahit on 4th April. Dr. S N Subba Rao addresses the gathering by saying that unique social and cultural aspects of the people of the northeast are a lesson for the rest of the country.
The ‘movement’ reached Shantiniketan on 16 April via eight NE states and covered entire nation rekindle the great ‘one India’ spirit.
Ms. Ishita Chaudhary from YP Foundation, India, in UN Taskforce Meeting
A UN taskforce looking into population and development has highlighted how the health of young women and girls is often compromised by a lack of human rights.
The UN taskforce on population has been set up to inform decisions for a new development framework after 2015 and will put forward recommendations for the promotion of sexual and reproductive human rights. According to the delegates of this taskforce, there is still much work to do in order to reaffirm values which were laid out nearly 20 years ago in Cairo.
But according to the UN group discussing this issue, many nations have an “unfinished agenda” when it comes to ensuring sexual and reproductive rights are backed up by law. This means that women and young girls in many countries still face a grim situation. Worldwide, one in three girls in developing countries are forced into marriage and around half of all sexual assaults occur against girls under the age of 16.
One youth representative travelled from India to speak to the UN delegates on this taskforce. Ms. Ishita Chaudhary from YP Foundation, India, earlier this month.
At the meeting of the UN taskforce, Ms Chaudhary highlighted that “young people’s voices often get lost” in discussions on population growth and development. She noted how topics concerning sex and sex education were not as “controversial” among young people as they were with governments and said young people simply wanted to be able to claim their human rights. These rights include women and girls being able to access sexual and reproductive health services and receiving protection against violence.
U.N. taskforce published a report on sexual health recently, said - it is only logical and fair that young men and women should be able to make their own healthy and well-informed choices about their bodies and private lives: sexual and reproductive rights are basic human rights. That's why it's great that young people themselves are ready to talk about this vital issue. Let's listen carefully to what they say.
Employment to Youths
As per information available with Directorate General of Employment Training, Ministry of Labour and Employment, number of youth jobseekers in the age group of 15-29 educated and uneducated taken together, all of whom may not necessarily be unemployed, registered with employment exchanges in the country during the 1991 and 2010 was 2.93 crore and 2.63 crore respectively.
This information was given by Minister of State for Labour & Employment Shri Kodikunnil Suresh in the Lok Sabha Sabha in written reply.
Skill Development Allowance to Unemployed Youth in H.P.
Himachal Pradesh Cabinet gave approval to give skill development allowance to the eligible educated unemployed youth for their skill development. This decision has come in fulfillment of promise made by ruling Party in its election manifesto.
The scheme aims at enabling such youth to develop their skill which in turn will enable them to take up employment or self-employment in the sector of their choice. Under the scheme, provision has been made to provide skill development allowance to the youth aging between 25 to 35 years of the State who have at least passed ten plus two from State recognized educational institutions. Under the scheme, the candidates will be given an allowance of Rs. 1000 per month and youth who are 50 percent or more handicapped will get Rs. 1500 per month.
Only 2% of India’s Youth have Vocational Training
Just 2% of India's youth and only about 7% of the whole working age population have received vocational training, a recently released survey report and published in reveals.
As in the past, hereditary learning or learning on the job continue to generate more skills than the whole formal vocational training set up of the country which includes 8,800 ITI's and 450 polytechnics. Hereditary learning - carrying on the family's trade like farming or pottery making - is the source of needed skills for 1.8% while learning on the job teaches 1.7% of the people between 15 and 59 years of age. In this age group, only 1.6% persons had got formal vocational training.
These shocking details emerge from a report of the survey carried out by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) in 2009-10. The survey covered 4.6 lakh persons.
What is the quality of vocational education? How far does it go in getting jobs? Surveying persons who had received or were receiving formal vocational training the report found an astonishing disconnect. Over 65% of rural laborers working at construction sites or agricultural fields had training in mechanical or electrical engineering, or computer skills. Nearly 58% of clerks had got computer related diplomas. Over 57% of urban women who had trained as beauticians or hairdressers ended up as marketing agents or personal service workers. More Engagement, Student Exchanges Needed with Indian Youth: Foreign Envoys
Emphasizing the need for better engagement with Indian youth, who comprise nearly half of the country's population, the envoys of four leading developed countries on Saturday pushed for greater student exchange programmes with India, speaking Cord Meier-Klodt, Deputy Chief of mission at the German embassy, at a seminar in New Delhi on 23rd February 2013 on "Youth Leading India into the Future". He further added "Germany needs skilled labour... many more are required in future, particularly skilled professionals, and for that we want tap more Indian youth."
Echoing the views, Swedish Ambassador Harald Sandberg said, "The youth represents the future. With its demography India represents the future, and we are definitely reaching out (to them)."
Canadian High Commissioner Stewart Beck said, "The reality is that we are not a country of traders and Canada has been good in developing technology. So the need is to focus more on innovation technology. Canada and India have been working together in this direction. The expensive Canadian technology should be made reasonable for India."
High Commissioner of Singapore Karen Tan noted that not enough Indian students and professionals were coming to the island nation. "Singapore and India are more close in terms of trade, connectivity, and distance, and being the 8th largest trading partner of India, the engagement should have been greater. She said that her country has student exchange and job swapping programmes with India, but "somehow the two countries haven't been able to take the engagement forward". "Singapore is like a hub to connect with people of different origins. Singapore has been trying to harness the potential of the Indian youth," she said.
This 9th Young Indians National Summit was organized by Young Indians, a part of CII.
