Invitation for panel discussion on future of nuclear power in India
Dear Friends,
Greetings from CYDA!
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the people in Japan, where thousands of people have lost their lives and their homes due to the devastating earthquake and nuclear power plant accidents.
As if all of this destruction wasn’t enough, the process of nuclear fission has begun in three reactor blocks of the atomic plant in Fukushima with catastrophic radio-activity leaking out in the open. We stand in solidarity with the brave rescuers who, under life-threatening circumstances are working to rescue and rehabilitate the victims.
Though India’s nuclear energy plays a comparatively small role in the entire Indian power supply (4.2 %), there are plans to largely expand the nuclear power energy production (to 9% in 25 years). How safe are the nuclear power plants in India? What are the possibilities of similar accidents occurring? Are there eco-friendly alternatives to fulfill the growing energy requirements of the country by replacing nuclear energy? These are just a few of the questions that the Japan nuclear disaster has raised.
Therefore, to find answers to these questions we would like to invite you to a panel discussion about the future of India’s nuclear power industry. The meeting will be held on Tuesday 22nd March.
