Hey everyone :-),

I recently had a talk with Modrine, who heads the Water and Youth International Movement in Kenya/Africa, a climate action project. He led the Africa delegation to the UN COP15 in Copenhagen, and is the founder of the Youth of Africa Initiative in Peace and Development, which focuses on sustainability projects, and presently serves as the Initiative’s coordinator in media and film. Modrine has also worked as a Communications Director in the Dpm offices, in Media Consultancy, and with the UNEP Freshwater Unit, UNHabitat Water, and as a youth representative to the African Ministers Council on Water.
Most importantly he's the Chair of the Youth Initiatives to the 6th World Water Forum.

So the bottom line is, he says he is going to get a bunch of us accreditation to the World Water Forum in March. He hasn't given me the full details yet, but he thinks he can get about 20 of us accredited, although he said he might not be able to secure funding for all of us.

I am going to include the notes I took of the conversation. Bear in mind I had a hard time understanding a lot of things due to bad connection. He is going to send us a finalized written summary of everything once it is finalized, by Jan 23.

ACT: Before you read these, please remember to fill out the doodle poll! http://www.doodle.com/b6q66mcyashx4t2n This will tell me what times are best for our group skype call!

Modrine call notes:

For the World Water Forum, Modrine is targeting 6,000 youth

Venue will accommodate about 3,000

But is coming out with “A village within a village”
A structure within the forum.
1.develop coherent youth vision on water issues, especially relevant to water issues
2. Raise awareness among the youth about water-related problems, solutions, and the problem
3. Create a youth water network
4.ensure wide and meaningful participation of youth to WWF

5. Articulate participation of different age groups. Children, teenagers, students, youth, and young professions

By youth we are talking about people under age 40.

*we lose 4,000 children daily on water-related illnessesdaily.

Modrine is organizing the following:
Granting access to EVERY SESSION in the forum.

Original process, political processes, thematic processes.

He wants youth to be able to be present and contribute. “We are GOING to do it. We are confident.” He says  it’s not like the COP.

Modrine is leading the African Region process on thematic target 2 (develop youth and water strategic plan by 2012, implementation of general streaming by 2015.

he thinks he can get us Train passes,

Working group of young people and young professionals that will be working on specific topics of the conference. Take a team to look at the topic deeply and extensively, come up with useful solutions.

UN Habitat and the Agency French Development will be the institutional partners to assist the young people. They’ll help us understand the process of WWF.

We will have an international call for solutions (Feb). The theme is solutions.
the call will ensure that young people understand the WWF process as well.
Link with organizations like YOUNGO
Then have a central call once or twice a week for everybody.

Youth Water Forum.

They have a Coordination team . 10 ppl, Then within there is a task force, a parliament, school age, young professionals.

He’s going to get us, or some of us,  into the WWF, and that we be the link between YOUNGO and WWF.  He’s not sure how many of us he can get, how many of us he can fund. Etc. Once we find out, we can decide as a group how to choose, keeping in mind who is available to travel on those dates, etc.

Ok, that's all for now. remember to fill out the doodle poll, and I'll talk to you soon!

Hello Adam,

Well done for getting in torch with the world water forum. This is a very good step in the right direction.

About a two weeks ago, I submitted my abstract on contamination of protected water sources in slums to be considered for presentation at the forth coming 6th forum.

I'm very glad with the step which our group has taken to be actively part of the forum.

Thanks,

Evans

Hey all,

It seems we didn't have a call in the end? Just another shout for that. It would be really great to talk to everyone if we can.

This looks a really great way to build more knowledge of water into YOUNGO and hopefully make us capable of making a positive impact.

Jamie

Adam, a massive thanks for all your work on this stuff!

Ya mon,

at this point I think we should wait until after the 23rd, when we hear back from everyone at the WWF. Thoughts?

hey
Good going Adam! Yea we can have a call after 23rd/24th I suppose. And I still haven't been involved to that great an extent with international water issues leading up to Rio+20, though I really want to. Jamie, can you help a bit on this regard on how I can do that?
Thanks
Armin

Sure, I think we can all help add something Armin! Probably bes to wait until we can have a call and then post all the minutes so anyone that cannot make it can catch up. That sound ok?
