Hello,

Just a quick reminder that we are looking at funded and volunteer applications for the NICE meeting this afternoon. If you are interested, please drop me a line or give me a call on 07525 085843 so we know to include you on the list.

Paid places will still be available after today, contact me for details.

With over 50 European youth circus workers attending and representatives from key UK based groups it will be a really useful and interesting few days. Basic programme below.

All the best

Workshops
• Juggling For The Masses is an introduction to the adapted juggling environments and equipment of Mr. Craig Quat. This workshop discusses the true meaning of juggling as an activity and shares methods of creating and facilitating such alternative environments for recreation. The approaches and equipment shared are applicable to both standard technique training and especial needs programing. When presented properly, Juggling can be the most accessible of all circus disciplines - All we need to do is rethink the way we think about the activity. This workshop changes our understanding of what it means to juggle, challenges the way we instruct, and reconsiders what benefits it provides.
• Games- always popular at NICE seminars, there will be games sharing every day, facilitated by our own Steve Cousins, Pete Duncan, plus Jonos Dract, who is planning a games exchange next year in Belgium.
• Flying Trapeze- We have a petit Volant and would like to invite you to play on it! There’ll be a limited amount of workshop places available on each day.
• Aerial technique, Led by top aerialist and NoFit State’s lead coach Adie Delaney

Forums, Panel Discussions, Presentations
• Funding- Now that Youth in Action has been replaced by Erasmus, what funding opportunities are available to the youth circus sector? What are the opportunities for circus funding going forward?
• Music for Circus- A special session with Gareth Jones, former Musical Director of NoFit State’s Bianco, now pursuing a career with his band “Fireproof Giant”. Gareth will discuss how he writes music for contemporary circus acts
• CATE- EYCO, the European Youth Circus Organization have for the past two years been working on this project, using expertise from across Europe to develop a teacher training course for youth circus trainers
• Exchanges, collaborations and partnerships across international borders - Led by The Roundhouse, London. The Roundhouse is one of the UK’s most eclectic performance spaces and a major programmer of contemporary circus. Call to Create is a global collective of cultural organisations that believes it’s time to shout louder about the great art young people make. The Roundhouse staff will be leading a discussion on the topic of international partnerships, followed by a discussion, leading to the creation of a plan for future exchanges. http://www.roundhouse.org.uk/about-us/call-to-create/

Saturday

Workshops
• Jugglers Anonymous is an instructors training of Mr. Craig Quat’s 5-Step Juggling Model. The approach differs significantly from the traditional 3-ball juggling lessons in that it is a top-down approach. The instructional method prioritizes concept learning prior to component or technique learning of more standard education models. The 5-Step Juggling Model increases the accessibility of juggling and the success rate of students. This workshop will be presented as an interactive walk-through that models and discusses best practices.
• Games
• Flying Trapeze
• Rigging & Counterweight technique- A trademark of Nofit State, learn how lift and lower people and equipment safely and effectively using bodyweight and pulleys.
• Inclusivity- breaking down barriers to working people with special needs.

Forums, Panel Discussions, Presentations
• Pathways and Gateways- Panel discussion with Tim Roberts, vice president of FEDEC and head of the degree programme at National Centre for Circus Arts, London, plus Bim Mason, head of degree at Circomedia. Bristol. Discussion on options for young people who want to take circus learning further. What does establishing HE courses in a country do to the professionalization of circus?
• Safeguarding- Previous NICE meetings have discussed the diversity of approaches to safeguarding children across Europe. This session will begin to discuss creating a framework for safeguarding which could be adopted across Europe. Participants are requested to bring along any existing safeguarding policies they use in their organization.
• Open Space Technology – Open Space Technology is one way to enable all kinds of people, in any kind of organization, to create inspired meetings and events. Issues that matter to individuals are raised and can be discussed with people who have expertise. We have people from diverse backgrounds from across Europe in Cardiff, and using OST we will raise questions and find solutions to issues that we bring to the table.

Sunday

Workshops
• Games
• Flying Trapeze
• Creating characters.
• Acrobatic technique – Skill share session led by NoFit State in-house team

• Challenging Behavior- Discussion on ways of dealing with challenging behavior in a teaching environment
• What next- Vision session Where next for NICE? Who will be next year’s hosts? What would people like to see in future meetings?

Hey Phyllis

I hope you are well.  I spoke to Lynn briefly the other day and she suggested we could invite one of our tutors to be there as an experienced teacher to chat to the newer artists and teachers who attend.  Can I amend our application to myself, Sylvia and add in one tutor (Undecided who it will be just yet!) and we will be there for just the Saturday.

All the best,
AM

Hi Phyllis,
I am definitely planning to attend the NICE event. Planning to arrive on 31st and leaving on the 2nd November.  Not sure if there are any subsidised places left or how it will work, but just registering interest.
Also, wondering if there are any spaces left for international delegates.  The coordinator from Caravan circus Network could be interested in attending, but hasn't had any info through. Is there something I could send to him?
Will
