Hello Kiran,

Let me first give you an insight into the levels of CA examinations.

1st Level - CPT - This level involves multiple choice based questions
and is a simple extension of your curriculum in your 12th. It is not
difficult to crack and roughly 70% of students clear this. So should
not be a problem for you.

2nd Level - IPCC - This level consists of 2 groups. 1st group has 4
subjects & 2nd group has 3 subjects. Clearing this level is a
challenge for 3 reasons -
a. The portion is huge
b. You have to attend your college (Graduation) & your CA coaching classes
c. You also have to start your articleship (3 year training under a CA).

However, serious students do find a way to manage it all. This is
where you need to plan well if you are passionate about becoming a CA
and this planning has to start now!

Once you are doing your CA, you dont have to study much for your
graduation and therefore you can give your college a miss.. but only a
few colleges are not too bothered about students attendance levels
(Podar, HR.. to name a few..). However, you need to score well in your
12th to get into such a college, if you are not a student of these
already. Second is selecting the right coaching class.. it shouldn't
be too far from home / college / office.. at the same time you cant
compromise on the quality of teachers.. so select your classes
accordingly.. thirdly is where you do your articleship from..
articleship is extremely important since you get a lot of practical
knowledge on what you are studying.. also you are working with fellow
articles in your office with whom you can share your knowledge,
studying patterns, exchange notes, etc.

If you are able to clear this level, then you certainly have the
ability to be a CA. roughly 20-25% of students clear this. If somehow
you find it all a lot to manage.. Even if you clear the 1st group of
this level and complete some period of your articleship, the ICAI
awards you a degree of being an Accounting Technician which recognizes
you as being employable.

3rd Level - CA Final - This is the last level.. involves 2 groups
having 4 subjects each.
Its the toughest of levels but you will be used to managing office and
classes and would have completed your graduation before you give this
exam. Offices generally give a leave of 5-6 months for you to prepare
for this exam. Loads of hard work is required to clear this. Again
roughly 10-15% of students clear this these days as compared to hardly
3-5% earlier.

So therefore, I believe if you want to pursue your CA, pursue it with
a lot of positivity, commitment and willingness to work hard.. else it
might end up being a waste of time. Further, I have also seen a lot of
bright students not being able to crack these exams in the first or
even the second attempt.. but they work harder and come back. One of
my friends ended up giving 6 attempts each of both the 2nd and 3rd
level and today he is a CA earning over 7.5 lakhs pa. So please do not
be demotivated with bad exams. CA exams are famous for this.

However, if you want to discontinue CA at any stage, students opt for
a lot of other professional courses..

1. Company Secretary (CS) - Similar in exam structure to CA, but its a
specialization in Company law matters. You should ideally take up LLB
as your graduation. However, you can do this along with Bcom as well.

2. Cost & Works Accountant (ICWA) - Again similar in exam structure to
CA. But you are specialized in cost accountancy. Can be done along
with BCom.

3. MBA - You can prepare for your CAT and end up doing MBA with
finance as a specialization. But the college you do your MBA from is
extremely important.

4. CFA - Certified Financial Analyst. Another professional exam which
gives you a specialization in financial analysis. These are employed
largely by market research organizations, credit rating agencies and
stock broking houses.

5. CFP - Certified Financial Planner. These are basically relationship
advisors employed by wealth managers to structure financial products
and sell them to individuals.

Hope the above solves your query. Personally I would like you to take
up CA since it covers aspects of all other courses mentioned and has
the best demand in the industry.

All the best!

Inder
