Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi
Sikhs celebrated Vesakhi nationwide on a grand scale yesterday, marking the 312th year of the establishment of the Khalsa order.
Dressed in colourful turbans and traditional salwar kameez, they thronged their respective gurdwara in the thousands.
The celebrations began on Tuesday with the recitation of the 1,430-page Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Sikh holy scriptures.
The Khalsa, or the “pure”, are Sikhs baptised according to Sikh rites.
It was on
this day in 1699 that the 10th master of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji
created the Khalsa in Anandpur Sahib, India,
following continuous oppression from invaders from Central Asia.
In SEREMBAN,
Sikh Youth Organisation (SNSM) head Amarjeet Singh said the religious event was
significant as it stressed the
importance of equality and that there should be no distinction by way of castes or creed and that none was superior or inferior by birth.
Sikhs and their non-Sikh guests partook in guru-ka-langgar (vegetarian meals) and traditional dishes as kheer, balushahi, and gulabjamun.
Many were also awed by the traditional Sikh music and the singing of hymns performed mostly by Sikh priests and musicians from India.
Former SNSM head Malkith Singh said the Prime Minister will attend the national-level Vesakhi open house at Merdeka Square on May 2.
The event, which will among others, feature Sikh traditional dances such as giddha and the energetic Bhangra music, will be held from 3pm to 8pm.
