"Individuation of the Self in Early Adolescence"

Peer friendships in middle school provide the context for practicing new identities and separating both from one’s parents and one's childhood self. Central to this developmental phase are questions such as “Who am I?” and, conversely, “Who am I not?” In this talk, I’ll speak more about the developmental processes of separation and individuation, why these tasks are crucial to young teens later forming a cohesive and integrated adult self, and how we as caregivers can provide them with the support they need to do so.

Mr. Van Brocklen is the founder and president of Dyslexia Consultants.  He is an expert at helping dyslexic children improve their reading and writing skills. He has developed a unique system based on extensive brain research and his own personal experiences as a dyslexic.   In 2002 Mr. Van Brocklen received funding from SUNY Center at Buffalo’s Business Plan Competition.   Dr. James Collins, a professor at SUNY Center and author of Strategies for Struggling Writers, approved Mr. Van Brocklen’s research which extended Dr. Collins’s own research on students with mild dyslexia to those with severe dyslexia.   Based on those findings, the NY State Senate funded a multi-year study in upstate suburban school districts. Since then Mr. Van Brocklen has worked extensively with students and their families around the country to help them not only improve their skills, but also build their confidence and opportunities for long-term success.   For the last two years he has been a presenter at the Manhattan Everyone Reading Conference focused on improving the writing skills for Grades 6 -12.

“Become Learning Enabled”

Mr. Russell Van Brocklen will be discussing his unique method for helping struggling adolescent, dyslexic students improve their writing, reading and organizational skills. By using examples from his own clients and research, he will explain how the brain of the adolescent dyslexic works and the social and emotional toll it can take on both the student and his or her family.  He will demonstrate how to take a struggling middle school writer who is having difficulty writing complete sentences to someone who is able to master a 5-paragraph essay and improve his reading skills at the same time.

“Radically Relating to your Middle Schooler”

Imagine purposefully connecting to your adolescent child so they can be responsible, independent, and successful.  Adolescents have to constantly decide; “what is cool” and “what isn’t cool.”  They are surrounded by outside influences that all make an impression on what they think.  How can you have an impact on the peer pressures they face? How can you step in so your opinion matters? Relating at a very core level creates a safe space for their voices and feelings to be heard.
