DECEMBER 2010 NEWSLETTER

Thanks for joining us at our annual art auction!! Just last week our members, friends and
supporters came together to celebrate the work that YWU has done and continues to do. There was live
painting, great live music, tons of raffle prizes and more than 50 pieces of local art! Debra Walker gave a
motivating speech about the importance of artists and worker rights, and we all celebrated the fact that
San Francisco has some of the strongest labor laws in the country, and the fact that young workers are
a part of making that happen. Senators Leland Yee and Mark Leno stopped by to recognize YWU for our
dedication to improving labor standards, by continuing to educate on workers rights, work on ending wage
theft and by collaborating with OSHA on workplace trainings on safety and workers rights.

We would like to thank everyone who donated food, drinks, art and raffle prizes! We couldn’t have done
it without you, and we appreciate you supporting our important work! Thanks to everyone who bid on art!

La semana pasada nuestros miembros, amigos y los que nos apoyan se reunieron para celebrar el
trabajo que ha hecho y que sigue haciendo YWU. Hubo pintura en vivo, música buena en vivo,
muchos premios de rifa, y más de 50 obras de arte de la comunidad local! Debra Walker nos inspiro
cuando hablo de la importancia de artistas y derechos laborales, y celebramos el hecho que San
Francisco tiene unas de las leyes más fuertes en el país para proteger a trabajadores, y el hecho que
Jóvenes Trabajadores Unidos ha sido parte en realizar esta realidad. El Senador Leland Yee y Mark
Leno vinieron para reconocer a YWU por nuestra dedicación al mejoramiento de estándares en el trabajo,
y por seguir educando sobre derechos laborales y trabajando para dar alto al robo de sueldos y por
colaborar con OSHA para dar entrenamientos de seguridad, salud y derechos laborales.

Quisiéramos dar gracias a todos quienes donaron comida, bebidas, y premios para la rifa! No hubiéramos
podido hacer todo sin ustedes, y apreciamos su apoyo para nuestro trabajo importante! Gracias a todos

On December 1 and 2 YWU participated in “Turning the Tables - Improving the
Conditions of Restaurant Workers in San Francisco”, a teach-in our partners at CPA and
La Raza Centro Legal, in addition to the Office of Labor Standards enforcement.  We reached 354 students,
with participation from different departments- Asian American Studies, Latin American Studies, and Labor Studies.  
We had several students sign our petition with Progressive Workers’ Alliance for the Workers’ Bill of Rights.

En el 1 y 2 de Diciembre, YWU participo en “Revolviendo las mesas- Mejorando las Condiciones de
Trabajadores de restaurantes en San Francisco”, una lección con nuestros aliados de CPA y
La Raza Centro Legal, y con la Oficina de la Aplicación de Estándares Laborales, la agencia que ayuda a
enforzar las leyes laborales en SF.  Alcanzamos a 354 estudiantes, con participación de departamentos diferentes-
Estudios de Americanos Asiáticos, Estudios de Latinoamérica, Estudios de Labor, etc.  Muchos estudiantes
firmaron nuestra petición con la Alianza de Trabajadores Progresistas para una Declaración de Derechos
de Trabajadores.  Miren el artículo que escribió el periódico de City College sobre el evento:

As many of you know, this year we helped to form the Progressive Workers’ Alliance,
a coalition of worker centers across SF, fighting to improve working conditions and
take back power as workers.  On November 18 PWA participated in the National Day of Action against
wage theft.  We had over 200 people on the steps of City Hall, with speakers ranging from caregivers, restaurant
workers (our very own member, Alicia Soon made a very dynamic speech), to the Office of Labor Standards
Enforcement, Supervisor David Campos and John Avalos, the Department of Public Health, to UNITEHERE Local 2
and SEIU Local 1021.  We called attention the reality that workers across SF, the state, and the country are
facing wage theft every day, and to call on local officials and departments to continue to work with us to accomplish
a Low-wage Worker Bill of Rights.  Here are a couple of articles about our action:

Como muchos de ustedes ya saben, este año ayudamos en formar la Alianza de
Trabajadores Progresistas, una coalición de centro de trabajadores a través de SF,
luchando para mejorar las condiciones de trabajo y regresar el poder al trabajador.  
El 18 de Noviembre, PWA participo en el día Nacional de Acción contra robo de sueldos.  Tuvimos más de
200 personas en la entrada del Alcaldía, con oradores empezando con trabajadores de casa y restaurantes
(nuestra miembro Alicia Soon hablo con una presencia dinámica) y siguiendo con la Oficina de la Aplicación
de Estándares Laborales, el Supervisor David Campos y John Avalos, el Departamento de Salud Publica,
y también UNITEHERE Local 2 y SEIU Local 1021.  Llamamos atención a la realidad que trabajadores a
través de SF, el estado, y el país están enfrentando el robo de sus sueldos diario, y para empujar a los oficiales
locales y departamentos locales que sigan trabajando con nosotros para una Declaracion de Derechos de

Neighborhood center, at 362 Capp Street.
