The Progressive Workers Alliance claims victory! This past Tuesday over 200 members of the Progressive Workers Alliance and community friends held a press conference and rally at City Hall to demand justice for all workers and urged the Supervisors to support the Wage Theft Prevention Ordinance. It was a success when the Board of Supervisors voted yes, 11-0. It was a truly historic moment.

Thank you so much to all of the workers who took the courage to speak up and share their stories about their experiences with wage theft and who also took leadership and organized to fight back! You are truly an inspiration and remind us of the power we hold when united. And thank you to all the workers who continue to speak out and organize to demand just and equal treatment.

This campaign and victory was over a year in the making. We wish to especially thank all the members and staff of the organizations that make up the Progressive Workers Alliance, that helped make this happen.
Much love to: Chinese Progressive Association, Filipino Community Center, La Raza Centro Legal's Day Laborer Program and Women's Collective, POWER, Pride at Work, Mujeres Unidas y Activas, PODER and Coleman Advocates.

We also would like to thank all the community groups, elected officials, community leaders, labor and countless other organizations that have supported and endorsed our campaign throughout. Thanks for having the workers´ backs!

¡La Alianza de Trabajadores Progresistas reclama victoria! Este pasado Martes más de 200 miembros de la Alianza de Trabajadores Progresistas y amigos de la comunidad tuvieron una conferencia de prensa y manifestación en frente de la alcaldía para demandar justicia para los trabajadores y instar a los Supervisores a apoyar la Ordenanza de Prevención del Robo de Sueldo. ¡Fue un éxito cuando los Supervisores votaron sí, 11-0! Fue realmente un momento histórico.

¡Muchas gracias a todos los trabajadores que tomaron el valor para hablar y para compartir sus historias acerca de sus experiencias con  el robo de sueldo y que también tomaron liderazgo y organizaron para defenderse! Son sinceramente una inspiración y un recuerdo del poder que tenemos cuando estamos unidos. Y gracias a todos los trabajadores que continúan ejerciendo sus derechos y organizando para demandar tratamiento igual y justo.

Esta campaña y la victoria fueron el fruto de más de un año de labor. Deseamos dar gracias especialmente a todos los miembros y el personal de las organizaciones que pertenecen a la Alianza de Trabajadores Progresistas, que ayudaron a que esto sucediera.

Los mantendremos actualizados en los próximos pasos de nuestra campaña y continuaremos contando con su apoyo para Terminar el Robo de Sueldo.

OSHA certified restaurant worker trainings  As many of you remember, in March, YWU members became certified OSHA trainers in Safety and Health in the workplace.  Since then, we have conducted trainings at restaurants in our guide (including Poesia in the Castro), at City College, and at the YWU headquarters.  All trainings are free and each participant receives a certificate from UC Berkeley and YWU.

We are looking for more interested participants.  Our upcoming trainings in August are as follows: Thursday, August 11, 6-8pm at the YWU office, 215 Golden Gate Ave, Thursday August 18, 5-7pm at the Mission Cultural Center Theatre, 2868 Mission Street, Tuesday August 16, at Arizmendi Bakery, from 2-4pm at 1268 Valencia Street. Please call the office to RSVP if you would like to participate in any of these sessions.  If you cannot make it to any of these, but you would like to arrange a training, we will be conducting trainings through September for any group of 10 or more in Spanish or English.  Please contact us if you are interested in pulling a group together.

Entrenamiento de certificación de OSHA  Como muchos ya saben, en Marzo los miembros de YWU asistieron un entrenamiento de certificación por entrenar trabajadores en el tema de Seguridad y Salud en el lugar de trabajo.  Desde cuando, hemos conducido entrenamientos en los restaurantes de nuestra guía (incluyendo Poesía en el Castro), en City College, y en las oficinas de YWU. Todos los entrenamientos son gratis y cada participante recibe un certificado de Uc Berkeley de YWU.

Estamos buscando a más participantes interesados. Las fechas en agosto: para nuestros entrenamientos son: Jueves  el 11, 6- 8pm en la oficina de YWU, 215 Golden Gate Ave, Jueves el 18,5 - 7pm en el teatro del Centro Cultural de la Misión, 2868 Mission St,  Martes el 16, en la panadería de Arizmendi, de 2-4pm en 1268 Valencia st. Llame por favor a la oficina de YWU si quisiera participar en alguno de estos sesiones. Si no puede asistir en alguno de estos, haremos mas entrenamientos hasta el fin de septiembre y podemos citar cualquier grupo de 10 o más en español o inglés.  Llámennos si quieren participar!

YWU BBQ Thank you to our awesome YWU Advisory Board member, Warren Mar, and his wonderful wife, Susan McDonough, for hosting a YWU BBQ at their home to celebrate our work and raise funds.  We had a number of visitors and shared some delicious barbecue chicken and ribs, and then enjoyed some incredible brownies!

Thank you to our Phenomenal staff and interns! We were sad and excited to send Angela Pullen off to Medical School in Missouri in mid-July!  We were happy to have Angela on board with us to help with fundraising, and to have her wonderful energy and smile in our office.  Thank you, Angela, and kick butt in Med School!

This summer, we were fortunate to have Willie Zuniga as our CORO Exploring Leadership Program.  He contributed a lot to our Wage Theft campaign, and helped us with OSHA trainings.  Thank you, Willie, for your work!

¡Gracias a nuestro personal e voluntarios fenomenales! ¡Estabamos tristes y emocionados mandar a Angela Pullen a la Universidad de Medicina en Missouri en medio de julio! Nos dio mucho gusto tener Angela con nosotros a trabajando para ayudar con recaudación de fondos, y para tener su energía maravillosa y a sonrisa en nuestra oficina. ¡Gracias, Angela, y que te vaya muy bien en la escuela de medicina!

Este verano, éramos afortunados tener Willie Zuniga como nuestro Intern del programa de CORO, ¨Explorando el Liderazgo¨. Él contribuyó mucho a nuestra campaña contra el robo de sueldos, y nos ayudó con entrenamientos del OSHA. ¡Gracias, Willie, por tu trabajo!

YWU Upcoming Events

• YWU at Sunday Streets - Please join us on Sunday, August 14th at 215 Golden Gate Ave for Sunday Streets Festival where the YWU crew will have a bike wash station and playing the best of cumbia's, merengue and tropical. Come boogie with us from 10am-3pm.

• YWU is going to Sacramento on Monday,  August 15, in the morning (exact time to be announced). That day the State Senate Appropriations Committee will hear two important bills:  the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights, which provides equal legal rights to domestic workers,  and the TRUST Act, which allows counties to not participate in ICE's "S-COMM" Program.

PLEASE JOIN OUR ALLIES!  FULL RIGHTS FOR WORKERS!  NO MORE DEPORTATIONS!

WHEN:  Monday, August 15, Time to be announced.
WHERE:  State Capitol Building, Senate Appropriations Committee, in Sacramento.

• Movie Night - Due to the success of our last movie night, where we showed Boom: the Sound of Eviction, we have decided to make movie night a monthly event. Our next movie night will be on Wednesday August 17th, and we will be showing Romántico, a documentary by Mark Becker. Come, bring your friends and snacks, and enjoy the movie with YWU!

• YWU en las Calles el Domingo - Por favor acompanenos el Domingo, 14 de Agosto en la 215 Calle Golden Gate para el Festival de Calles en Domingo donde nuestro conjunto tendra una estacion de lavar bicicletas y estaremos tocando lo mejor de cumbias, merengue y tropical. Vengan a bailar con nosotros desde las 10am-3pm.

• YWU se va a Sacramento el Lunes, 15 de Agosto en la manana (tiempo exacto sera anunciado). Ese día el Comité de Apropiaciones del Senado oirá dos propuestas de ley importantes: La Declaración de Derechos para Trabajadoras Domésticas, que proporciona los derechos legales a trabajadoras domésticas, y al Acto de TRUST, que permite condados para no tomar parte en el programa de S-COMM de Inmigracion.

• Noche de Película - Debido al éxito de nuestra última noche de película, donde mostramos Boom: el Sonido de Desalojo, nosotros hemos decidido hacer la noche de película un acontecimiento mensual. Nuestra próxima noche de película será el Miércoles, 17 de Agosto, y estaremos mostrarándo Romántico, un documental por Mark Becker. Venga, traiga a sus amigos y bocados, y disfrute de la película con YWU.
