Celebrating International Worker’s Day 2012

This May Day we were honored to have worked in the months leading up to it with a crew of amazing community friends. Together with SF Pride at Work/HAVOQ, MUA, El/La, La Colectiva and CUAV we developed a grand theater piece for the May Day march and organizing a very vibrant and festive march through the Mission with many allies joining. We were also out in full force with our friends from the Progressive Workers Alliance standing up for low wage workers and and communities of colors fighting against the 1%. We look forward to working with our community allies and friends and collaborating on future projects to continue deepening our relationships despite our differences in language and identities.

Este Primero de Mayo tuvimos el honor de trabajar de antemano con un grupo de amigxs comunitarios. Juntos con SF Pride at Work/HAVOQ, MUA, El/la, La Colectiva y CUAV desarrollamos un teatro callejero para la marcha y organizamos una marcha vibrante y celebratoria por toda la Misión con muchos aliados que nos unieron. También tuvimos una gran presencia con nuestros amigxs de la Alianza de Trabajadores Progresistas, representando a los trabajadores de bajos sueldos y comunidades de color luchando contra el 1%. Esperamos continuar trabajando con nuestros amigos y aliados de la comunidad y colaborando juntos en proyectos para fortalecer aun más nuestras relaciones a pesar de nuestras diferencias en idioma y identidades.

Immigrant Day 2012 at the Capitol!

Immigrant Day 2012 in Sacramento was yet another beautiful day: over 400 participants attended 80 scheduled legislative visits and conducted over 20 drop-ins to legislators throughout the state to promote numerous pro immigrant bill. Six members from Young Workers United were there in support of our state's immigrant communities advocating for the TRUST Act and the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights along with other worker centers from the Northern, Central and Southern California.

El Día del Inmigrante 2012 en Sacramento fue otra vez un día hermoso: mas de 400 participantes atendieron 80 visitas a los legisladores y conducieron mas de 20 visitas improvistas a diferentes legisladores del estado para promover numerosas leyes pro inmigrantes. Seis miembros de Young Workers United estuvieron allí en apoyo de las comunidades inmigrantes de nuestro estado promoviendo la Acta de Confianza y la Carta de Derechos para las Trabajadoras Domesticas, junto con otros centros de trabajadores del Norte, Valle Central y el Sur de California.  

YWU wins Back Wages!

YWU has seen recent victories in winning back wages for workers in the service industry!  Three workers were recently paid over $10,000 for unpaid overtime, lack of breaks, unpaid wages, and penalties for not being paid final wages.   One worker had been working as a Cook and Dishwasher for a well-known North Beach restaurant for 6 years.  He was never paid overtime and often worked 10-12 hours with no breaks.  The pressure of his workload became so overwhelming that he nearly had a heart attack and could not report to work for several days.  He was happy to get his back pay and to see the restaurant change its practices when he and a co-worker demanded their proper wages owed to them by law.

YWU ha tenido unas victorias recientemente en ganar sueldos retrasados para trabajadores en la industria de servicios!  Tres trabajadores has sido pagados mas de $10,000 dólares por overtime no pagado, falta de descansos, y multas por no haber dado pagos finales.  Un trabajador trabajaba como Cocinero y Lavaplatos por un restaurant reconocido en North Beach por 6 anos.  No fue pagado para sobretiempo y a veces trabajaba 10 a 12 horas sin descansos.  La presión que tenia por tanto trabajo le causo un pre-infarto y no pudo trabajador por unos días.  Estaba feliz cuando recibió su dinero y por ver el restaurant cambiar sus practicas cuando el y un compañero exigieron sus sueldos apropiados.

Wage Theft Taskforce

You may remember that last August the SF Board of Supervisors unanimously passed the Wage Theft Prevention Ordinance.  As a follow up to this victory, we have been working with the Progressive Workers Alliance, Supervisors  David Campos and Eric Mar, and legal advocates to support the creation of a new city-wide taskforce that will work to address the issue wage theft in San Francisco.  Last Tuesday, June 5, the Board of Supervisors again unanimously supported low-wage workers by passing legislation to create a wage theft taskforce! The taskforce will launch in September and meet for a number of months, bringing together several City Agencies as well as community organizations, businesses, and legal advocates to build relationships and think together on creative solutions to this grave problem of worker exploitation.  Check out the segment on KPFA.

Tal vez recuerde que el Agosto pasado los Supervisores de SF pasaron por unanimidad la Ordinanza de Prevencion de Robo de Sueldos.  Siguiendo esta victoria, hemos estado trabajando con la Alianza de Trabajadores Progresistas, Supervisores David Campos y Eric Mar, y abogados de la comunidad para apoyar la creación de un equipo que trabajara para terminar el robo de sueldos en San Francisco.  El Martes pasado, 5 de Junio, Los Supervisores del Condado de San Francisco otra vez apoyaron por unanimidad a los trabajdores de bajos sueldos pasando legislación para crear este grupo contra robo de sueldos!  Ese grupo lanzara en Septiembre y reunirá por meses, juntando varias agencias de la ciudad, así como organizaciones comunitarias, negocios y abogados comunitarios para crear relaciones y pensar juntos en soluciones creativas a este problema de la explotación de trabajadores.  Escuchen las noticas del radio sobre esto, en KPFA.

YWU Teaches

This Spring, our members and staff went to over 30 classes at City College and SF State and talked to over 1,000 students about worker rights and organizing!  Our Education to young and immigrant workers continues to be a vibrant part of our work where YWU members get the opportunity to teach their peers about what rights we have as workers and how to defend them when we find ourselves in abusive situations.

Esta primavera, nuestros miembros y personal fueron a mas de 30 clases en City College y SF State University y hablamos con mas de 1,000 estudiantes sobre derechos laborales y organizar!  Nuestra educación a trabajadores jóvenes e inmigrantes sigue siendo un parte vital de nuestro trabajo, donde los miembros de YWU tienen la oportunidad de enseñar a sus compañeros sobre los derechos que tenemos como trabajadores y cómo defenderlos cuando nos encontramos en situaciones abusivos.

Welcoming Summer Interns

A warm welcome to our interns this summer!  We will host 2 amazing interns from the SOULsummer school, Yahaira Carrillo from the Kansas/Missouri Dream Alliance in Kansas City Missouri, and Manuel Ramirez, from the Worker's Defense Project in Austin, TX.  Soon after we will have a new fellow from the Coro Exploring Leadership Program, Carlos Torres.  We want to thank Carmela Meehan, Wendy Zhao, Perry Perry Ali Karayal, and Sam for their contributions volunteering at YWU for the last several weeks!

Una bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes en prácticas este verano! Tendremos 2 voluntarios de la escuela SOUL, Yahaira Carrillo de la Alianza de Sueños Kansas / Missouri en Kansas City, Missouri, y Manuel Ramírez , del Proyecto de Defensa de los Trabajadores en Austin, Tejas. Poco después vamos a tener un nuevo compañero del programa Coro Explorando Liderazgo, Carlos Torres. Queremos dar las gracias a Carmela Meehan, Zhao Wendy Zhao, Perry Perry, Ali Karayal, y Sam por su contribución como voluntarios en YWU en las últimas semanas!
