Hi All,
I would like to throw Monday, 5pm, 6pm or 7pm GMT as suggestions in the pot. Does somebody want to maybe start a doodle for the appointment? Ethan, I can understand that you would like to hand over this project but I was hoping you could join us for this first call, please, as you were the one who spoke with Shelly about the potential project.
What does others think?
Best,
Bernadette

Hello all,
I am available for a Skype meeting, though as I am in the Pacific US Time Zone, I am 8 hours behind GMT. Therefore I could do Thursday 3-4 P.M. GMT (which is 7-8 A.M. PT) if absolutely necessary, however I would prefer a slightly later time on Monday. Esther, can you do anything later on Monday?
I agree that for some things it is important to communicate with Shelly as a group, as opposed to many individual threads all repeating each other.
Talk with you soon,
-Kimberley

Hi all,
One more thing - I just realized that there we are confusing the capacity building groups in YOUNGO - ooops:
The email for the group who does capacity building for YOUNGOs is
youngos-cap...@googlegroups.com
To add to the confusion there is another newly formed group - a policy group - who looks at the topic of capacity building in the text and we have been copying them:
youthclimatepolic...@googlegroups.com
I have changed it now for this email so maybe we get somebody on board soon ;-)
Best,
Bernadette

Hi Jean Paul and all,
This is really an excited opportunity and as I said earlier I am very happy to act as intermediary with PAI on this proposed project. I would very much assume that Kimberley would indeed be interested to work on this as well so let's coordinate and move forward.
May I suggest a coordination call between Ethan, Esther, Kimberley, me and anybody else who would be interested (do we have somebody who can speak on behalf of capacity building)? How is your availability tomorrow from 10am to 4pm GMT, on Thursday from 1pm to 5pm GMT or next Monday from 1pm to 10pm GMT?
If a call isn't useful we might want to start an email conversation instead. I feel that it is important to get back to Shelly from PAI soon and with a joint suggestion for cooperation rather than starting individual conversation threads.
Let me know what you think!
Best wishes,
Bernadette
PS: I have copied the girls and young women group in this email - please read the messages below if you are new to this conversation to see what it is all about :-)

Hi Ethan and all,
Great to see how discussions are moving positively with Shelly from the PAI.
Regarding the next steps it's very important that we follow those discussions and don't miss this opportunity. Ethan have you been contacted by someone from the Capacity-building WG yet ? The WG should work to identify YOUNGO priorities on this opportunity so that the offer meet the lack of training. The attached file you sent can really help here as it provide more useful information.
Is Esther and Bernadette accepted to lead respectively the global south aspect as well as the gender aspect you raised in your e-mail ? If not yet perhaps you could remind to them that. I also think Kimberley could work closely with Bernadette on the gender aspect as they both manifested their interest. I'm not sure the gender group proposed in a previous e-mail is already created. Any idea here ?
One more time, good work Ethan and let's make it happen !

Date: Dimanche 13 février 2011, 1h03Hey all.
I had a very productive call with Shelly Amieva from Population Action International about their potential youth health issues related to climate earlier this week. She was happy to get our feedback, but she asked me to emphasize that PAI is exploring the potential of expanding their youth/climate/reproductive health advocacy and research and that nothing is definite yet.
However, it is my impression from the meeting that if enough us say "hey, we're glad to hear that you're considering this, we think it's good for the youth climate movement, we specifically need this, this, and this for capacity building, this is how you can help us empower ourselves" then it is much more likely to happen.
She'd like to be in touch with someone from the Capacity Building working group who could give her an idea about YOUNGO capacity building in the past and how it might work with PAI (please, someone from the Capacity Building WG email me!), and someone from the Girls and Young Women and Climate Change policy group (Bernadette, it's you if there are no objections), and also someone who can speak a little about global south youth capacity building around climate/health (Esther, I'll send her your contact information if that's alright). If you want to interact with Shelly about youth/climate/reproductive health issues, or if you know people who are interested, please let me know and I'll give you her contact info and update you more about our conversation so far. Please also make sure interested people read PAI's proposal further down in this email thread so that they can get a better idea of what PAI is thinking of doing.
Attached is a Youth consultation carried out by Advocates for Youth (perhaps another capacity building partner) about the intersection of youth/climate/health carried out last year (Note: only 36 participants..so many more here!). Good document to get a feel for these issues, and a good document showing what type of capacity-building data we can point to for future funds if we can set up partnerships other organizations.
More ideas, more people, more strategy welcomed.
Now, dinner time. Hope you all are well.
Ethan
P.S. Could someone please add the the girls and young women working group to this thread (I'm sure there are more ideas there) and also add them to the list of YOUNGO WGs here: http://groups.google.com/group/unfccc_youth?pli=1?On Thu, Feb 3, 2011 at 7:50 AM, Esther Agbarakwe <done...@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello everyone.
Thank you so much for your feedback! It has all been very helpful.
I plan on talking with Shelly at the Population Action Institute later this week or early next week about this feedback and better understand how we can collaborate. After this initial discussion, perhaps we can open up these talks further and put more people in touch with Shelly.
I want to emphasize, as Shelly did, that they are currently only exploring the potential of adding a youth component to an existing climate and health program. However tentative this is, it is good that we have so much to bring PAI from the youth perspective.
Good day to you all,

Hi Kimberly, Marcie and Ethan,
I am excited to see that the gender topic is taken up in the bottomliner team and beyond and thrilled to see that there are finally more people wanting to actively engage on the gender topic. As Kimberly quite rightly pointed out WAGGGS has been coordinating (not controlling!) a policy group called 'girls and young women and climate change' at the last two COPs but didn't have the capacity to keep it going between COPs.
We started out with promoting the group widely within YOUNGO and the gender constituency and openly inviting as many interested people along as possible to get the discussions started, learn and share and kick off some action. Therefore I am surprised that Kimberly thinks the group isn't open or democratic - maybe it is worth having a conversation about this to get some prejudice and misunderstandings out of the way.
In WAGGGS we certainly have great experience in youth work, educational programmes, promoting youth participation in decision-making and lobbying at UN events but not so much background for example in research so I feel there is great potential to join forces and move beyond lobbying and influencing the text together. I don't think that it makes much sense to have two parallel groups.
Best wishes from frosty London,
Bernadette

Subject: [BL team] Re: Youth Climate Movement and Research Opportunities
Hello there Ethan,
Thanks for including me in this conversation. I've known Rodger-Mark since he was part of Sierra Club's Population and Environment Program when I was a Green-Pink Fellow with them. He just took this new position at PAI right before Cancun, and when I saw him there, we discussed possible collaborations and important research/messaging gaps to fill (such as plugging 350ppm and climate justice goals into our framework).
On YONGO's end, we need a formal Gender group. The "Girls and Young Women" group that sorta existed these last two COPs is essentially controlled by WAGGGS and only has that name on the insistance of their delegation leader (whereas "Gender" includes men and women). It is not an open and democratic group, nor does it really exist yet between COPs. I want to change that. I request an official Gender Working Group with a Google Group linked to unfccc_youth, though I am not sure where it goes in the YOUNGO structure. I don't think it fits as a sub-group of Policy, as we would not solely be focused on text and negotiations, but also working with youth on the ground in their home communities and capacity-building of youth organizations [i.e assisting youth climate movement groups to include SRHR (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights) and bringing youth SRHR groups into the youth climate movement]. We already started this important connecting work in Cancun by having workshops at COY, bringing a few international youth SRHR activists to the conference, and working with existing SRHR orgs (like PAI) such as through side-events. However, we need to do more and also formalize our efforts so that they are not dependent on a handful of people and anyone who's interested can join.
Possible @googlegroups.com emails for the Gender Working Group: youth_gender_climate, youngo-gender, and related permutations...
Based on Shelley's email below, their Research, Advocacy, and Communications breakdown seems relevant and I think Kyle's main points are good. The outline Shelley provided is for PAI's internal structure/goals, though they generally align with what we're doing or would like to do. Certainly we are open to working with specific organizations to accomplish meaningful goals (like we have with Advocates for Youth, GoJoven, Sierra Club, and others).
We need support in terms of research, messaging, and truly integrating SRHR into YOUNGO's efforts/mindset/policies when appropriate (such as the issues surrounding marginalizing gender that I brought up at the YOUNO debrief after COP16). This certainly means workshops at COY, though I personally am intrigued by the idea of trainings or other virtual events throughout the year, as well as during COY. Funding for international SRHR youth to attend COY7/COP17 is a big part, as well as for actions/events while there, but we also need to work on general movement building (or in the case, "movement-integrating" may be more appropriate :D ).
We could certainly help PAI determine many of the items bulleted in Shelley's email and are working on some of those already (particularly messaging), but I'll save specific elaboration for later!
Basically, collaborating with PAI is a great opportunity and I would love to be part of a conference call resulting from your communications with Shelley or anything else where my participation could be useful.
Also, Marcie and I talked about growing the YOUNGO Gender Working Group, so she may be particularly interested in following or participating in this sort of conversation.
Thanks, hope you enjoyed your weekend, and looking forward to talking with you more,
-Kimberley

Hey Kimberley.
Before I reach out to Shelley at the Population Action Institute about collaborations with youth and YOUNGO regarding reproductive health, foreign policy, and climate change, I would really like to hear what you have to think, what you've been doing in this area, and what you envision as possible in this potential PAI initiative outlined below.
Because you're the expert yo.
Thanks and good day to you,

Dear Bottomliners,
Shelly Amieva from Population Action International contacted me about collaborating with youth, the pith of the message being this: "I am interested in learning more about the need for capacity building [for YOUNGO] and how PAI can help strengthen the youth climate movement."
The message below goes into their interest in reproductive health and climate change and how they are beginning to envision their role in strengthening the movement.
Please take a look and send some feedback and ideas about what you all think a collaboration might look like, what might be good to talk to Shelly about, and things people who speak with Shelly should think about before a conversation. Also, if anyone else is interested in speaking directly with Shelly about this initiative, please let me know.
Never would have known about this had I not yelled at someone who looked familiar on the street who turned out to be an old friend...it's climate magic.
Good day to you all,
Ethan

Dear Ethan Case,
I work at Population Action International in the Research Department and I am a colleague of Erika Larson. The Research Vice President, Roger-Mark De Souza, is interested in adding a youth component to our research department, including our Climate Change Initiative. Currently, we are in the process of assessing what potential niches PAI could find within the RH/FP-youth Climate movement and what value PAI could add to this youth climate change movement. If we were to incorporate a youth component to our department we imagine that this work might involve the following components:
Research:
* Determine research gaps on international youth RH/FP topics
* Research the capacity building needs of youth-organizations regarding research and advocacy
* Determine gaps and conduct research on specific RH-climate change connections of particular relevance to youth
* Develop a small grants program to promote young researchers interested in exploring RH/FP-climate change connections
* Develop a research mentoring program to match established researchers with youth-based organizations
Advocacy:
* Determine strong entry points for youth advocacy on RH/FP issues
* Determine key opportunities, partners and countries for advocacy on RH/FP-climate change connections
* Develop a small grants program that would strengthen the advocacy capacity of youth led and youth focused organizations interested in linking FP/RH-climate change connections
Communications:
* Determine messages that work for youth on RH/FP - climate change connections
* Determine the best ways to contribute to existing coalition efforts that are reaching out to youth
Erika informed me that you are actively involved in the international youth climate movement and attended the COP16 international climate negotiations with SustainUS. What struck me about the information she provided about you is that your are interested in partnering with organizations to build capacity of youth organizations in order to strengthen the international youth climate movement. As I mentioned to you, we are only in the initial process of scoping for such opportunities but I would love to have a chat with you about this. I am interested in learning more about the need for capacity building and how PAI can help strengthen the youth climate movement. Please let me know if your schedule would allow for setting up a telephone call to further discuss this.
Sincerely,
Shelly Amieva
