In this email, I am asking for feedback on ideas related to a possible cooperation with UNITAR to build the skills and knowledge of YOUNGO participants. Hi all,
BackgroundI fully agree that we should invest more energy on capacity building within our movement and more particularly for our delegates to UNFCCC meetings. We could achieve a lot more impact in this process if we could enhance our participation by ensuring that we have a good understanding of the issues discussed.
Since I was in Geneva 2 weeks ago, I arranged a meeting with the staff of the UNITAR (UN Institute for Training And Research) in order to discuss with them how we could cooperate with them and benefit from their activities in terms of skills and knowledge of the members of our movement.
Wilson already discussed this issue with someone from the Institute last year, so they already had an idea of what the YOUNGO is. Also Preety Bhandari, the senior manager of the UNFCCC secretariat in charged of the unit involved with youth participation and education, suggested at Bonn2 to Rishi and I that we consider cooperating with UNITAR to build the capacity of the YOUNGO.
UNITAR work on Climate ChangeThe main task of the UNITAR, a UN body, is to provide innovative training for professionals in relation to participation to the work of the UN or the implementation of its program at the local level. The UNITAR works primarily for governmental delegates to the UN but also targets civil society representatives and members of local administrations.
The two program areas that are relevant for YOUNGO are in climate change (
http://www.unitar.org/ccp/) and environmental governance (
http://www.unitar.org/egp/).
Suggestions for cooperation YOUNGO-UNITAR need feedback here within 1 weekAfter our introduction meeting, they asked me to send a list of suggestions/demands from YOUNGO by email in the following weeks. I listed a few here and would be happy to get some feedback on this or some suggestions on what else I could include. Obviously, we should rather think of suggestions that will not require any significant financial commiments from them (at least until we decide to come up with a serious project, in which case, we could possibly consider going for something bigger).
- provide experts from their pool for regional workshops and meetings organized by YOUNGO before the COP16,
- identify which of the experts from the UNITAR pool is taking part to each the UNFCCC meeting, and which is their field of experience, and communicate this information to us so that YOUNGO can get in touch with him/her and check if we can arrange a short briefing on this domain of expertise if relevant to our activities,
- offer an online workshop/tutorial for youth representatives on the key policy issues identified as priority by YOUNGO (so far education and forest), this workshop would best be designed specifically having in mind youth as participants
- provide expertise for the COY in the form of experts leading workshops
- include youth as multipliers for future project of UNITAR focused on awareness raising, share any call for partners with YOUNGO on awareness raising project when UNITAR needs local partners
- include youth observers at the meeting of the UNITAR pool of climate experts which will take place during the COP16,
- send submission on the role of IGOs in climate education/awareness raising for the review of the amended New Delhi Work Programme for the SBI33 based on UNITAR experience (deadline 16th August)
Any thoughts?
