The Legend of Zelda has been around for decades, and it often hides secrets and Easter eggs in its many explorable environments. Usually, dying in a Zelda game has no impact on the story - though the player may be punished with lost progress. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is the one game where the player should never let Link die. This is not because Link's Awakening is a particularly unforgiving game, but because if Link dies even once, it changes the story completely.
Link's Awakening follows the titular character as he explores Koholint Island in search of eight musical instruments, which will awaken the island's deity and allow him to escape. In classic Zelda fashion, Link must balance roaming the overworld with conquering underground dungeons. However, Link's Awakening changes the Zelda formula in many ways, adding new mechanics like fishing and playing an ocarina (before Ocarina of Time), and may have the darkest story in the franchise.
The reason players should never let Link die is simple but unique among Zelda games - completing the game with zero deaths grants an alternate ending. Unfortunately, the effort required arguably does not match the prize, as the story's end remains the same, but the player does get to view a secret scene during the credits that displays a certain character's fate. Like other Zelda games, Link's Awakening is not particularly easy, and completing it without dying either takes serious practice or a willingness to reload past saves, but it does provide a compelling extra detail to a somewhat unsatisfying conclusion.
Link's Awakening is not the only Zelda title with a secret ending, but no other game requires a no-death playthrough. Although a spin-off, Age of Calamity's secret ending is unlocked through post-game quests, Spirit Tracks' ending differs slightly based on a single dialogue choice, and Majora's Mask has a different credit scene depending on the player's side quest completion. Both Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages have a different ending if the player links the two games, which even allows access to an extra boss. Even Breath of the Wild has an additional ending scene for players who restore all of Link's memories before beating the final boss. The secret ending in Link's Awakening implies that Marin had her wish fulfilled, and was able to leave Koholint Island as a seagull even after the Windfish was awoken.
In many ways, Link's Awakening's extra content is the most demanding, and considering the brief credit scene, perhaps the most disappointing. Though it is unorthodox and even acts as a parody of the Zelda series, Link's Awakening is not among the most difficult Zelda games, but one unlucky boss fight can ruin the entire run. However, beating any Zelda game without dying is an impressive achievement, and it deserves to be recognized - even if the prize is underwhelming. The secret scene gives Zelda fans a reason to master the game beyond pride, and subsequent titles would have been wise to follow suit for the sake of replayability, so it is a shame that Link's Awakening is the only The Legend of Zelda game where Link should never die.
