My dear friends,

Might you be interested in a Young Stationers dinner being held in Jesus College, Oxford, on the 16th (Tuesday of noughth week), with the High Sheriff of Oxford, in an evening we are holding jointly with the Oxford Society of Young Publishers?

The dinner is thrown for all those who work in writing and publishing books, could be interested to do so, study and teach publishing, or simply find it interesting.

We will be beginning in Merton College at 6 pm, for wine and cheese, to be shown the Old Library, and be told by Dr Giles Bergel about new research into the origins of British publishing - drawing on the Stationers' Register (which lists all books published, starting in 1554).  We will also have a short talk from one of OUP's more legendary editors, about changes in publishing over a 30-year career, and a senior member of the English faculty talk about Shakespeare and his Stationers.

We will then be dining in Jesus College, with sherry, three courses, and wine, and a short jovial address by the High Sheriff (who also is a printer, and clerk of the Stationers' livery company).  After dinner, Limehouse Books CEO Bobby Nayyar (a young graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge) will tell us choice gossip from the London Book Fair, about his own experiences in publishing, and his advice for those considering either working in publishing or submitting book proposals.  (Dining costs come to £48; port is being donated by the Young Stationers.)

We promise a very pleasant evening, and lengthy after-festivities, for those inclined!  The evening has a Facebook page, at https://www.facebook.com/events/235034353308692, and those wishing to come should e-mail me.

Other Young Stationers events in the near future:
  • Friday, 12th April - a repeat of the inky and choral tour of St Bride's Church and St Bride's Foundation, with wine and the St Bride's Choir, meeting in the back of St Bride's Church at 6.30 pm.  Newly elected Aldgate Ward Common Councilman Dhruv Patel will be there, as well Lady Reid.
  • Sunday, 21st April - 'Bride's to Brighton' cycle, to benefit restoration work on the Wren steeple of St Bride's Church, beginning with bacon butties in the church yard cooked by Churchwarden and Liveryman Peter Silver.
  • Friday, 3d May - Civic Lunch in the Guildhall, at which the Managing Director of City AM newspaper, Lawson Muncaster, will speak, along with this year's aldermanic sheriff, the Hon Jeffrey Evans, who will be accompanied by the Hon Mrs Evans.
  • Friday, 18th October - Dinner in the Peers' Dining Room of the House of Lords, as grateful guests of Lord Laird of Artigarvan, with an interesting leading journalist to speak.
I look forward hopefully to seeing a few of you on the 16th or elsewhere in the future, and please do let me know however I might be of any help!

with all very best wishes,
Pádraig
