Dear friends,
Hullo - I hope all of you've been very well! John Whittingdale OBE MP, the chairman of the House of Commons Culture, Media, and Sport Select Committee, will be the speaker for our Christmas Dinner.
The MP for Maldon has been very visibly associated with the telephone hacking and libel issues, and led his Committee's widely viewed 2009-10 investigation, which he issued a summons to compel the Murdochs to attend. The Guardian called the appearance of Rupert and James Murdoch before Mr Whittingdale's Committee on 19th July 'the most important select committee hearing in Parliament's history'.
Dinner is half 7 for 8 pm (a slightly later start time, as there may be a 7 pm division) in Buck's Club in Mayfair, suits (rather than dinner jackets, as our speaker will be dashing to us from work), and will feature Christmas crackers and silly hats. At the conclusion of the more formal portion of the evening, as usual, a rather large number of us, and our hats, will make our way to Soho for further reasoned parliamentary debate.
The Young Stationers have previously had, as guests in our dinner series, Lord Inglewood, Lord Black of Brentwood, Chris McKane (Executive Editor of the Times), and (on 25th November) Desmond Browne QC. We have not yet had Santa.
Yule, as it were, be eating (and drinking):
Manzanilla La Gitana sherry
Chicken liver paté with pickles Macon Uchizy 2011 Domaine Talmard
Roast Suffolk turkey with chestnut stuffing, bacon wrapped chipolatas and cranberry sauce Château Tuilerie du Puy 2010 Bordeaux Supérieur
Traditional Christmas pudding served with brandy sauce
Coffee with 'festive chocolates'
Fonseca LBV 2007
We've 45 places, and I do hope this will give people who couldn't join us in the House of Lords or Athenaeum the chance to pop along for a bit of eggnog. So I'd really be very grateful if you might reserve your place by sending in your pennies (£65) by BACS to account 02779270 and sort code 30-96-35 (my personal slush fund at Lloyds TSB, Oxford Carfax), or by PayPal to padraig...@gmail.com (please do just add in an extra £2.50 for PayPal charges).
