Dear Young Stationers and friends,

Hullo, and I hope all of you are very well indeed!

We will be having a Young Stationers dinner in the House of Lords on the 23d February, with Lord Balfe as our host, who will be speaking to us about Europe, the coming General Election, and the press.

Lord Balfe first stood for the European Parliament in the first direct elections in 1979, winning election for the London South Inner constituency; he continued to sere in that body until 2004, and entered the Lords in September 2013.

Dinner is 7 for half 7 pm, black tie, and in the Attlee Room.

The menu is below.  Chianti because Europe.

Sherry

Shellfish consommé. Served with mixed shellfish.
2012 House of Lords Sauvignon Blanc, Vin de Pays d’Oc

Loin of venison. Served with winter vegetables, jasmin-soaked raisins and chestnut purée
2010 Terrafina Chianti Superiore, DOGC, Tuscany

Cheeseboard. Selection of English cheese Served with celery, grapes, seasonal chutney and assorted breads and biscuits.

Coffee and House of Lords Chocolate truffles

House of Lords reserve port

Everyone is most welcome.  Pennies tot up to £90, and to my account (sort code 30-96-35 and account 02779270).  (There is a Facebook page here.)

We also will be taking part in the Shrove Tuesday pancake race at Guildhall, next Tuesday from midday.  The Master and I will represent the Stationers, attired stylishly in gowns, chefs hats, and cooking gloves, racing madly down the Yard at Guildhall, and all whilst flipping pancakes.  Do come.  There is lunch after in the Guildhall Crypts, for £25 per person for a buffet; if you let me know, and send pennies to the account above, I will reserve you a place.

Other upcoming Young Stationer frolics for your diaries include:
  • On 13th to 15th March, the weekend before St Patrick's Day, we will have a group outing to Dublin, to visit the Irish Times, the United Arts Club (where we will have a dinner), the Old Library of Trinity College Dublin, Archbishop Marsh's Library, the Gate for a Pinter play, St Patrick's Cathedral for evensong, possibly one pub (just the one), and hear over dinner from a few Irish journalists and writers.  (Facebook page here.)
  • Not a Young Stationers event, but all of you are very welcome to the Garrick Club on 17th March for a St Patrick's Day dinner, which will be in support of the Alzheimer's Society and my Channel appeal.
  • And our Annual Dinner this year will take place 20th July in Stationers' Hall, when we will award the second Young Stationers' Prize.  (Last year's recipient was Katie Glass, columnist at the Sunday Times, with ES Magazine editor Andrew Barker and children's book publisher Nick Coveney coming proxime accesserunt.)

I'm also very grateful to everyone who came along to our annual Oxford evening on the 5th February, which this year we held jointly with the Oxford University Society of Bibliophiles; as well as to our Burns Night dinner in the Caledonian Club on 19th January, with Court Assistant Michael Binyon OBE, foreign correspondent from The Times, and Liveryman Haggis.

with all very best wishes,
Paddy
