Dear friends,

Hullo, and I'm very happy to write about the next Young Stationers'
dinner, which is in a bit over a week's time! Lord Black of Brentwood
- executive director of the Telegraph Media Group - will be the Young
Stationers' next dinner speaker, on 18th September, at Buck's Club. I
do very much hope you can come and join us.

Dinner (which is black tie) is at half 7 for 8, at 18 Clifford
Street, W1S 3RF, and dining fees will tot up at £53.50 (to include
fizz, three courses, wine, and port).

Lord Black was director of the Press Complaints Commission from
2000-2006, and has called for 'serious' financial penalties to be
enforceable by a new press watchdog. He has also, though, called for
the son-of-PCC to be independent of Parliament and statutory
regulation of the press. During the passage of the Human Rights Act,
as director of the PCC, Lord Black successfully fought for the
inclusion of legislative protections for freedom of expression. He
was introduced to the Lords in 2010. In political life, he was press
secretary to Michael Howard and director of communications for the
Conservative Party. The Commonwealth Press Union Media Trust, which he
chairs, seeks to promote media freedom throughout the Commonwealth.

I suspect we'll follow the precedent of our July dinner (with Lord
Inglewood, at the Savile Club), and likely make our way to Gerry's
after, for those who would like. Please do send in your pennies
-Paddy till details: £53.50; cheques and singing telegrams to Flat 4,
21-23, Anerley Park, London SE20 8NF; paypals to
padraig...@gmail.com; or by internet banking to sort code 30-96-35
and account number 02779270 (Lloyds TSB Oxford Carfax branch, please
be merciful and put your name in the reference!)

I'm also attaching a press release from the 1908 London Olympics
which we held for the Lord Mayor's appeal, in which the City of London
Police defended their reigning Olympic Tug of War title against the
City of London Sea Cadets (photographs: bit.ly/1908pics). I'm also
very chuffed to note that the Young Stationers came second in last
week's Society of Young Publishers' quiz tournament!

I do hope we can see many of you for our next dinner on the 18th, and
please do just let me know however at all I can help.

with all very best wishes,
Pádraig
