Subject: [DMap] Represent, an open database of Canadian elected reps and districts
To: democr...@forums.e-democracy.org

Hello all,

My organization, Open North, is today launching Represent, an API (web service) to federal, provincial and municipal political districts and representatives across Canada. To see a demo and explore the API, visit: http://represent.opennorth.ca/

Represent establishes a foundation upon which other Canadian projects may be built - a necessary piece of infrastructure which we hope will enable useful and innovative features and products. It is free to use and open-source.

This open database was built by James McKinney and Michael Mulley, with important contributions from about a dozen open data enthusiasts. The project takes inspiration from mySocietys MapIt and code from the Chicago Tribunes Boundary Service.

We have so far completed the federal and provincial levels and are now turning our attention to filling in the municipal level.

If you have any comments or feedback, they are very welcome. If you are considering using the Chicago Tribune's Boundary Service for your own API, please contact us, as we have some useful tips and code to help you get started.

Cheers,

--
