Comrade Joe Ajaero's academic journey began in 1978 when he earned his First School Leaving Certificate from Ezelukwu Primary School in Emckuku, Owerri. He furthered his education, obtaining a Senior Secondary School Certificate from Emii Secondary Technical School, Emii Owerri in 1984. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, where he obtained a National Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1988. Continuing his academic endeavors, he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1990. His thirst for knowledge and professional growth propelled him to obtain a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism from the Times Journalism Institute, Lagos in 1994, followed by a Masters Degree in Industrial and Labour Relations from the University of Lagos in 1998. He expanded his expertise by acquiring a Certificate in Advanced Tariff Structuring and Subsidy Design Options from IP3 in Cape Town, South Africa. Additionally, he holds an LLB from Baze University, Abuja, and an LLM, Master of Law Degree specializing in Energy Law.

Comrade Joe Ajaero's commitment to continuous learning and professional development is evident in his various certifications. He is a graduate of the International Labour Organisation's Labour Training Institute in Turin, Italy, and an alumnus of the East and South African Management Institute. He has also obtained a Certificate in Board Management from the Institute of Management Development in Geneva, Switzerland, and has completed programs at prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, George’s Business School, Cambridge University, London, Operations Strategy of Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, Illinois, USA, Accelerating Strategic Innovation; Wisconsin School of Business.


Comrade Joe Ajaero's life has been marked by activism, journalism, and trade unionism. His unwavering dedication to human rights and labor advocacy led to his arrest and detention by the Abacha Military Junta. Currently serving as the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) since 2005, he previously held positions as a two - time Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) from 2011 to 2015 then, 2023 and Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC Political Commission from 2011 to 2015. He has also served as a member of the Board of the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and was a delegate at the Constitutional Conference in 2014. He was a Member of the Presidential Task Force on Power. In recognition of his leadership and commitment, he served as the Titular Public Service International (PSI) representing English Speaking East and West Africa and Executive Board Member of the Public Service International (PSI) in Geneva, Switzerland and currently serves as current Titular of ITUC. He sits as the current President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) since February, 2023.
