The Toyin Falola Masterclass - Human Rights in Africa: Universal Ideals and Contested Realities (Intermediate level)

This masterclass explores how Africans have influenced the concept of human rights and how these rights can move beyond moral and legal ideals to become practical realities. It charts the development of human rights in Africa, from traditional values of dignity, community, and justice to modern debates over democracy, development, and freedom. The masterclass considers how factors like slavery, religion, colonialism, anti-colonial nationalism, state formation, military governments, and authoritarian regimes have affected African rights discussions and practices. Moving beyond the framing of Africa as merely a site of rights violations, it emphasizes Africans as thinkers, activists, advocates, and builders of institutions who have reshaped global ideas of freedom, equality, self-determination, and collective rights.
