Dr. Olamijulo:

What you wrote here makes eminent sense.

Rome was not built in a day.

If a people do not try out of fear of failure, they will never know what
they can achieve.

This kind of Ola Kassim's *DEFEATIST ATTITUDE* is among what has *DESTROYED
and KILLED any CREATIVITY or ORIGINALITY* in Africans today.

We do not believe that we can anything except *ape and copy Europeans*!

How tragic!

We must all endeavor to reverse that trend!

Dear Dr. Valentine Ojo and Dr. Ola Kassim, Greetings.
Many thanks for your helpful comments.

Yoruba Aso-Oke is available in a wide range from very cheap to very
expensive.
Renewed interest in and adoption of Aso-Oke for widespread use in
Yorubaland can enhance a very worthy
Yoruba Aso-Oke Industry. Current prices of the already cheaper varieties
will come down even further.
Yoruba cotton farmers will get better local market for the cotton they
grow than they currently do.More people will take to planting cotton.
Yoruba Aso-Oke can be easily promoted to become a worthy export on the
African and World Markets.
Increased use of Yoruba Aso-Oke can surely help create many needed good
quality jobs in Yorubaland.
All these must be done mainly through creative efforts by the people
themselves, only assisted by Local and State Governments.
We did not advocate any compulsions in this. Force will be unnecessary,
even counter-productive.
Yorubaland for this discussion simply means areas currently inhabited by
mainly Yoruba People in Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo etc.
Widespread adoption of Yoruba Aso-Oke Modern Designs depends more on
enlightened helpful attitude of Yoruba elites than on anybody else.
If we do it and do it well, other Nigerian and African Language Groups
should be proud of us and rejoice with us.
They will also be encouraged in much needed African Constructive Pursuits
for African People Development.
Thank you.

Dear Dr and Mrs Olamijulo:
What percentage of Yoruba families can afford to purchase and maintain
school uniforms made of aso oke materials
for their multitude of children when they are already finding it difficult
to house and feed these children adequately?
These kids would be attending school in aso oke uniforms--the same schools
where there are insufficient desks and a dearth of
textbooks and writing materials and where a quarter to half of the kids
dressed in aso oke are too hungry to learn.

What percentage of Yoruba parents own an aso oke dress or outfit and how
many of those who own these elegant dresses and outfits
wear them on a daily basis?

Would the non-Yoruba pupils and students whose parents live and pay taxes
in Yorubaland also be forced to wear aso oke to school, regardless of whether or not they can afford these
expensive hand made materials.
Is it possible that you might be dreaming of the Yoruba land of
yesterday's Nigeria. Well intentioned as your proposal might be,
it would appear that you are trying to drive forward into the future with
the gear engaged in the reverse mode and your eyes fixed on the rear view
mirror.
A mono-ethnic Yorubaland is no longer possible in today's Nigeria not to
mention a Nigeria of the immediate and distant future. Needlessly to say,
this is also true for the whole of Nigeria!

Bye,

Ola

Subject: RE: [yorubas-community] Yoruba School Uniform Designs
This is more of what we would like to hear, and not Muslim fanatics like
Prof. Ishak, Hakeem Johnson, etc. who would like to *Talibanize the
Yoruba Cultural Space* by asking that Yoruba girls wear Arabic 'Hijab'
in 98 Degrees in the shade and the humidity typical of the Yoruba area as
part of their "school uniform", which can only lead to *a classroom full
of STINKING HEAD-GEARS !
Whoever wants his daughter to wear 'Hijab' to school can send her to
Saudi Arabia or better still, to Afghanistan or Yemen, where *the
underpant suicide bomber* got his religious training.
Thank you, Dr. Olamijulo and family, for not wanting to sell our
precious Yoruba culture that prides itself on, and is anchored firmly on *
TOLERANCE* to *Muslim Arab Slave Masters* or *European Christian
Colonizers*!

We the Yoruba cherish our ancient culture more than that!
