Power and politics are fundamental aspects of African experiences, past and present. Battles for power; battles over who governs, who gets what, where, how, and on what terms; as well as struggles over identity have defined different moments in African history and continue to inform African realities today. Through this Masterclass, we look at the politics of precolonial institutions, colonial rule, and postcolonial state building and how they have affected our ability to lead ourselves and our countries, be citizens, and pursue development. Africa’s past and present challenges, such as inequality, insecurity, corruption, and political exclusion, are rooted in how power is organized. However, we also highlight the resilience of African people, the continent’s growing demand for democratic governance, and the rise of new actors to question the status quo. By looking at power and politics, we hope to envision ways to foster a better Africa where politics and power work for all.
