Onumah has worked for over three decades as a journalist, author, rights activists, and social mobilizer in different countries around the world.
He is currently coordinator of the African Centre for Media & Information Literacy (AFRICMIL), Abuja, Nigeria. AFRICMIL is a pan-African centre dedicated to a new vision of media and information literacy as a key component in the education of young people in Africa. AFRICMIL also works on promotion of whistleblowing and whistleblower protection through its accountability and good governance project, Corruption Anonymous (CORA). He is Chair of the Board of the Scotland-based Whistleblowing International Network (WIN).
Onumah is the Co-founder of the Media & Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue Foundation (MILID Foundation), a not-for-profit organisation advancing media and information literacy for all through research, education, and participation. He is the Coordinator of the Socialist Library and Archives (SOLAR), a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to digitalize and preserve socialist, radical, and progressive history, culture, and literature.
From 2002 to 2004, Onumah worked as Director of Africa programmes, Panos Institute, Washington, DC, U.S.A., helping journalists in West Africa, as well as the Caribbean, report in depth on issues that are frequently underreported or misreported — issues such as HIV/AIDS, environmental degradation, and ethnic and religious conflicts.
From 2006 to 2008, Onumah was head of the civil society and crime prevention unit at Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) where he developed a civil society anti-corruption agenda for Nigeria.
Onumah holds a first degree in philosophy from the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria, an MA in journalism from Western University, London, Ontario, Canada, and a Ph.D. in communication and journalism from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.
Onumah is the author of We Are All Biafrans (2016), among other books. He has edited books on various subjects, including Edwin Madunagu at 75: Tributes and Reflections (2021); Remaking Nigeria: Sixty Years, Sixty Voices (2020), Testimony to Courage: Essays in Honour of Dapo Olorunyomi (with Frederick Adetiba) 2019; Making Your Voice Heard: A Media Toolkit for Children & Youth (2004); Anti-Corruption Advocacy Handbook (with Comfort Idika-Ogunye) 2006; Youth Media: A Guide to Literacy and Social Change (with Lewis Asubiojo) 2008; Understanding Nigeria and the New Imperialism (with Biodun Jeyifo, Bene Madunagu, and Kayode Komolafe) 2006; and Sentenced in God’s Name: The Untold Story of Nigeria’s “Witch Children” (with Lewis Asubiojo) 2011.
